President Trumps tariffs have sent the US agricultural industry into a full-blown crisis as canceled orders from China are forcing farmers to lay off workers or shut down their businesses, according to a trade group.
China last week made its largest cancellation of pork orders since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, halting a shipment of 12,000 tons of pork, according to the Department of Agriculture.
Meanwhile, China dropped its soybean orders to just 1,800 tons worth in the week ending April 17 down massively from 72,800 tons purchased the week before, the USDA said.

(1,293 posts)The orange POS gave them BILLIONS and bailed them out, as per usual. Same old same old. I read yesterday (daily kos maybe?) that he'll do the same again. They won't suffer cuz they're his biggest voting block, along with truckers.

(3,988 posts)I wouldn't be surprised if Trump bails out the farmers again. But a bailout could mark a very interesting development in MAGAland, much to the chagrin of, say, Arkansas governor Sanders, whose state did not receive federal disaster relief funds in the wake of tornadoes a few weeks ago. Trump would decide very publicly who among his base does and does not suffer. I don't like popcorn, but I'll gladly give you what I have here for that show.

(23,908 posts)There were century family farms lost..
The corporate farms got money from a rescue once they realized the damage done.. but once you lose your customers.. you don't get them back when the President has a sudden change of mind.
He just does not seem to understand farming or industry.. it is months sometimes years in the planning to get the right crop in the right widget designed.. it is not like selling a property and off you go.. We are so in the deep stuff
Iowa overwhelmingly supported him again.

(22,850 posts)First make sure that American farmers are no longer able to sell their goods in the global marketplace.
Next, when their businesses start to collapse because they don't have any customers, give them billions and billions of taxpayer dollars so they can sit there not producing anything.
This will give many of them a lot more time to engage in their second favorite activity -- going online and complaining about all the welfare moochers in big cities sucking off the government tit.
Finally, something something something -- and America is great again.
Anyone who doesn't see the incredible genius in this is obviously not a Trump supporter!

Description: "The bottom line is, today when you're able to do a $4.4 billion agreement, it's very clear that there's a high demand in this country for things that are grown and produced in Missouri."
Nixon plans to meet with aviation officials while he is in China to discuss the trading hub in St. Louis, but says it is not the focus of discussion right now.
