Jeffries Wants Dems to Put an End to the El Salvador Trips

Cory Booker and the Hispanic Caucus were planning on going. But Democratic leadership seems to want El Salvador trips to stop for a while.

HOUSE MINORITY LEADER Hakeem Jeffries was asked Monday whether Democrats should continue to advocate for the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and the other men wrongly shipped to El Salvador, by making the trip to the country to put a spotlight on the issue.

“Our reaction is that Donald Trump has the lowest approval rating of any president in modern American history,” Jeffries responded.

But while Jeffries may be publicly agnostic on El Salvador trips like the one Reps. Robert Garcia, Yassamin Ansari, Maxwell Frost, and Maxine Dexter recently took, privately he sees the trips as having run their course. Two Democratic aides and a lawmaker who spoke to The Bulwark said that the minority leader has discouraged further excursions to the country even as pressure mounts within the party to turn up the heat on Trump for sending 238 men to a notorious prison system known for human rights abuses.

“They want to let the El Salvador stuff slow down,” a senior House staffer said.

Just because Trump has low approvals now does not mean voters are going to reward Dems in two years. Especially if they stay silent.

This is political malpractice IMO.

Strong correlation to presidential approval and opposing party midterm performance.

The US electorate is highly reactive. Elections are essentially referendums on incumbent popularity.

The Jeffries/ Schumer strategy is to basically stay out of the way, let Trump inflict maximum pain, and hope it results in electoral disaster.

I personally don’t think that will work and even if it does, the Dem majorities will be smaller than they could be.

Don't follow the old coot's plan. I never trusted the man who speaks in triplets that he must have spent hours concocting.

Rump will NOT self-destruct if we only stand by and wait for it to happen. The Dems have to be able to claim the high moral ground on something -- opposing the rendering of people (& emphasize the (sick) children) to off-shore gulags and places unknown can do that. By the way, where's media coverage of the mom and kids in Honduras?

Maybe a next trip should be to Honduras to check on the 4-tear-old US citizen with cancer who was illegally deported with no medicine and no legal representation to stay in the US, which is his right.

They might all be rapists and drug dealers, but they all deserve due process.

Either we have a rule of law, or fuck it there is no country to pretend to be a congressman of.

Hey did you catch Jefferies and Bookers sit on in the capital steps yesterday? Today in hindsight, that was a waste of time.

To these trips. A photo taken with one person. Who ends up being in MS-13 would be a huge fuck up. And considering the hight opportunities to be set up in that exact situation by Trumps buddy down there......seems like something to avoid
