FYI INSURANCE SCAM ALERT If you have Anthem Blue Cross insurance (maybe just in California)

We received a letter stating that Anthem had received information from the IRS that their records didn’t match. We needed to complete a form which included my name and birthdate — it required I add my SS number, sign and date it. This packet was incredibly professional, including all the usual inserts, using the standard Anthem font, etc.

After speaking with Anthem, including their Fraud team, this is a FAKE. They stated they will NEVER request a SS number in a printed form — this kind of thing would be dealt with through our employer.

I don’t know if this scam is circulating among other insurance companies or if it’s just our insurer or our state. BUT IF YOU RECEIVE A LETTER FROM YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY REQUESTING YOU FILL IN YOUR SS NUMBER, ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU COMPLY.

I hope our situation is helpful to someone here.

Claiming their records were incomplete and needing all my info again.
To the best of my knowledge they aren't even my insurer, so I ignored it. It hasn't been repeated, and I have not received any follow-up.
