'To see the measles come back is really terrifying'

PORTLAND, Oregon — Health officials are warning about misleading information aimed at preventing measles as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports rising case numbers across the United States.

"We thought measles was virtually eliminated in the U.S., so to see these numbers is quite alarming," said Dr. Scott Spencer, a pediatrician at Pediatric Associates of the Northwest.

Like most physicians, Spencer is encouraging patients to get the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination to prevent measles.

One of the episodes that stays with me is the measles epidemic, brought by a sailor on a visiting ship and transmitted to a child of a missionary, who then passed it on to the native children and consequently into the general population, killing many of them. There was a frightening scene of the Hawaiians dying on the beaches, where they hoped immersion in the ocean would give some relief.

We used to know how to prevent outbreaks like this.
