(25,032 posts)For decades, they portray themselves as fiercely independent patriotic supporters of small government and the second amendment. Now it turns out they were authoritarian followers waiting for the right authoritarian leader all along. What a tweest!

Trump has so poisoned our body politic, we are experiencing an authoritarian moment in this country.

(51,360 posts)Our father was authoritarian. I was defiant. My sister was supplicant, an ass-kisser.
And guess who our father favored?
My sister progressed into someone who couldn't think for herself. She echoed Dad's mantra of "I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong". She asked our parents to find her a husband. When she wanted to convert to Catholicism, she "justified" her choice but responding that The Church would tell her the right thing to do in all circumstances, that she couldn't make a mistake by deciding for herself. My sister just wanted to feel comfortable and compensated without taking on the responsibility. And she got the enjoyment of our father going after me when I protested his outlandish edicts.
And that in a nutshell is the mindset of Trump followers.
