When John Fetterman was released from Walter Reed hospital in March 2023, Adam Jentleson, then his chief of staff, was proud of his boss for seeking help for what the senators office and his doctor had said was a case of clinical depression. His six weeks of inpatient care had been the latest medical setback for the Pennsylvania Democrat, who had had a stroke mere months before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, nearly derailing his campaign against Republican Mehmet Oz. But a year after his release from the hospital, Fettermans behavior had so alarmed Jentleson that he resigned his position. In May 2024, he wrote an urgent letter to David Williamson, the medical director of the traumatic-brain-injury and neuropsychiatry unit at Walter Reed, who had overseen Fettermans care at the hospital. I think John is on a bad trajectory and Im really worried about him, the email began. If things didnt change, Jentleson continued, he was concerned Fetterman wont be with us for much longer.
His 1,600-word email came with the subject line concerns, and it contained a list of them, from the seemingly mundane (He eats fast food multiple times a day) to the scary (We do not know if he is taking his meds and his behavior frequently suggests he is not). We often see the kind of warning signs we discussed, Jentleson wrote. Conspiratorial thinking; megalomania (for example, he claims to be the most knowledgeable source on Israel and Gaza around but his sources are just what he reads in the news he declines most briefings and never reads memos); high highs and low lows; long, rambling, repetitive and self centered monologues; lying in ways that are painfully, awkwardly obvious to everyone in the room.
Fetterman was, according to Jentleson, avoiding the regular checkups advised by his doctors. He was preoccupied with the social-media platform X, which hed previously admitted had been a major accelerant of his depression. He drove his car so recklessly, Jentleson said, that staff refused to ride with him. He had also bought a gun. He says he has a biometric safe and takes all the necessary precautions, and living where he does I understand the desire for personal protection, Jentleson wrote, referring to Fettermans rough-and-tumble town of Braddock, Pennsylvania. But this is one of the things you said to flag, so I am flagging.
Another red flag, Jentleson added: Every person who was supposed to help him stay on his recovery plan has been pushed out. Fetterman was isolated, had damaged personal relationships, and was shedding staff. The turmoil in his office continued over the following year. Since winning election in 2022, he has lost his closest advisers, including three of his top spokespeople, his legislative director, and Jentleson. His circle of trust has shrunk, and people I spoke with made it clear that they expect more staffers to depart.

Whoa, this article is very eye-opening and concerning.

I disagree; she must act for herself, her children, and the public.
What's going on here must be dealt with honesty, and it appears Adam Jentleson wants to do just that. So why in the world would he lie about the situation? Where is the Democratic leadership to bring objective eyes to this mess?
In a statement, Gisele suggested Jentleson was part of a conspiracy to damage her husbands reputation, saying Jentleson fed her scary, untrue stories about Johns health. She added, I would talk to Johns doctors about what Adam was telling me and they would be confused. Those doctors would tell me that their concerns were not with John, but with Adam. Any alleged concerns heard from me came straight from those lies, not from Johns doctors or my own eyes. In response, Jentleson said, I stand by everything I said, and I hope Senator Fetterman gets the help he needs.

(18,426 posts)More seems to be going on than many of us even suspected. For the most part, I'd withheld judgement on his political oscillations, theorizing it had some positive purpose for Pennsylvania, and pending new information (like this). It's really important for everyone concerned that the senator receive any help he needs. And thanks to the staffers who care enough to reluctantly open up about this.

(10,247 posts)Gisele, however, wasnt so keen on traveling with him. It was a whole saga, said a former staffer. She wasnt going to go, and they had fights about it. To convince her, Fetterman told her to think of this as an opportunity to showcase what a model Dreamer looked like in an effort to get the president-elect to soften his views on illegal immigration. If she didnt go, Fetterman said, shed lose the right to complain about whatever he did as president. He said in a small group with senior staff, I told her to put up or shut up, the staffer recalled. If she doesnt go, I dont want to hear about it.

(11,769 posts)I was a huge supporter of Big John and chatted him up with friends and neighbors.
I was amazed at how he came back from a serious stroke, won the election and was upfront about his bouts of depression. Living in Delco at the time, I thought he was a perfect fit for the working-class angst of the moment. He spoke the language of my neighbors; he looked and sounded like them and was passionate about their concerns regarding, jobs, salary, housing, etc. Most, not all, loved his brashness, humor, his unflagging support of unions, reproductive freedom, even weed.
I don't have a subscription to the mag but the red flags listed are just that, flashing neon lights. Fetterman's trip to Mar-a-Lago was mystifying, even infuriating for most Dems. His repeated scolding of the Democratic Party is equally so. I'd read the man had lost his long-loyal staff and his offices locally and in DC were in a constant state of chaos.
In a world of depressing things, this is just another item to add to the pile.

John Fetterman, the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania and the Democratic frontrunner in next months high-profile Senate primary, said he was eager to affirm his unwavering commitment to bolstering ties between the United States and Israel in an interview with Jewish Insider on Thursday, emphasizing that he will lean in on such efforts if he is elected to the upper chamber this November.
Whenever Im in a situation to be called on to take up the cause of strengthening and enhancing the security of Israel or deepening our relationship between the United States and Israel, Im going to lean in, Fetterman declared in his first conversation with a Jewish publication since he launched his campaign more than a year ago. The relationship is a special one that needs to be safeguarded, protected, supported and nurtured through legislation and all available diplomatic efforts in the region.

(4,008 posts)Fetterman is refusing to follow the flight attendant's order to place his fastened seatbelt on the outside of his sweatshirt. In all probability, Fetterman does not have his seatbelt fastened and he is lying to the flight attendant by stating that he does have it fastened. The flight attendant offers Fetterman a seatbelt extender so that there would be ample length for it to be fastened on the outside of his sweatshirt. The video ends before the outcome of the confrontation occurs. Throughout the video, Fetterman seems to be mentally out of it.

(30,639 posts)A damning new report reveals how the Democratic senator appears to be endangering his own life, and those around him.
Hafiz Rashid
May 2, 2025/1:01 p.m. ET
Senator John Fetterman isnt in good shapeand could be a danger to himself and those around him.
New York magazine reports that Fetterman, who suffered a stroke in 2022 one month before being elected to the Senate, is unrecognizable to his past and present staff, prone to conspiratorial thinking and megalomania. His former chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, wrote his concerns in a May 2024 letter to Dr. David Williamson, the neuropsychiatrist who oversaw Fettermans treatment at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.
We do not know if he is taking his meds and his behavior frequently suggests he is not, Jentleson wrote, adding that Fetterman was avoiding the recommended regular checkups with his doctors. He also wrote that the senator was driving his car recklessly, often speeding while texting, making FaceTime calls, and reading entire news articles behind the wheel.
One month after the letter, Fetterman got into a car accident, driving home from the airport after an early morning flight well over the 70-mph speed limit on I-70. His wife in the back seat suffered a pulmonary contusion and spinal fractures, and Fetterman told one of his staffers that he had fallen asleep while driving.
