Isn't it law enforcement that normally tallies the numbers? I wouldn't trust them with this particular task.

G. Elliot Morris who runs the Strength in Numbers Substack has used crowdsourcing numbers to come up with an estimate of between 4 and 6 million. So pending more information, 5 million seems like the current "unofficial official" number.
