U.S. strikes Iran's nuclear facilities

Axios
The U.S. military conducted air strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan on Sunday morning local time, President Trump announced.

Why it matters: Trump's decision to intervene directly in support of Israel's effort to dismantle Iran's nuclear program marks a historic escalation in the Middle East.

I think he’s calculating that he’ll be able to get away with these attacks without further involvement. I doubt it…

With one eye on the polls. He is countering last Saturday’s debacle with something he thinks shows strength.

or mines that will become activated by default in the absence of a signal?
If so, then the Strait has already been mined. If it is not possible to do this, then any attempt to plant mines is most likely a fools errand.

17. Mines are funny little things, they do have lots of possible settings

Like they can be set to blow up on a certain number of ships passing. Like say don't blow up until 20 ships have passed, or just ignore smaller ships. They can also be set to try to target a specific ship or class of ship for the more technical advanced countries. Like there are some that are basically a torpedo that can listen by sonar for say a ship with 2 props turning a certain speed.

But no once set they can not remotely turn them on, and most have a self shutdown that is measured in days or weeks. Most countries know if they mine somewhere, at some point they will need the same water ways, so they build in that safety.

Desperate times mean desperate measures, and I think it would be foolish to believe that this bombing will go unanswered. Maybe nothing will come of this, but it's hard to believe considering who the players in this game are.
