Trump sues Corporation for Public Broadcasting to oust board members
The president fired three Democrats running the organization that funds NPR and PBS, but they say the terminations were illegal.
The Trump administration sued three members of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting on Tuesday, more than two months after he attempted to fire them.
The lawsuit, which seeks a federal judges approval for the terminations, comes as the Senate is set to vote over the future of federal funding for public broadcasting, which the CPB doles out to PBS, NPR, and member stations across the country.
Board members Laura Ross, Thomas Rothman and Diane Kaplan received emails on April 28 from Trent Morse, White House deputy director of presidential personnel, telling them they were fired. On behalf of President Donald Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is terminated effective immediately, Morse wrote. Thank you for your service.
But the CPB and the three board members the Democrats on the five-member board said the firings were illegal and, along with the organization, sued the government the next day. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is not a government entity, and its board members are not government officers, CPB spokesperson Tracey Briggs wrote at the time. The CPB did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
