Sorry But America Disgraced Itself At The Ryder Cup

Last edited Sun Sep 28, 2025, 10:57 AM - Edit history (1)

Not even talking about the poor golfing, I'm talking about the ignorant insults hurled at Rory McIlroy and his family.

A constant barrage of F bombs and other vulgarities was bad enough, but insults about his marriage, about his family was a disgrace.

A dozen or more police had to be called in to be a buffer between Rory and the ignorant crowd, even the USA golfers tried to tone down the chants.

USA USA, well count me out, I started rooting for Rory.

A lot of other ignorant shouts that I care not to report about.

This may end up being the largest drubbing that any Ryder Cup team gets, and the US was the favorite. Maybe the atmosphere was ugly because Krasnov showed up the first day for his photo-op?

Ryder Cup 2025: Walking with Rory McIlroy amid the shower of F-bombs and abuse as Bethpage crowd crosses a line
By JOEL BEALL
SEPTEMBER 27, 2025
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The backstroke was aborted as a “F*** YOU RORY” arose from the right side of the fourth green… What made the scene shocking was not its divergence from what golf is, but that it had become the status quo for what McIlroy suffered throughout Saturday afternoon.

…He walked toward the green to mark his ball, taunts erupted from spectators lining Round Swamp Road. "Choker!" they screamed in unison. "Remember Pinehurst!" The grandstands flanking the green transformed into a countdown timer, fans bellowing numbers as McIlroy deliberated over his birdie putt. "You're taking too damn long!" one roared, attempting to weaponize their own impatience. When McIlroy's attempt slid past the cup, the cheers exploded into slurs: "Leprechaun!" "Overrated!" “Take out the Irish trash!”

… The European team had arrived prepared, boasting about VR headset training sessions designed to simulate crowd hostility. They claimed to be ready for the worst. But no simulation could replicate the toxic alchemy at work here: alcohol mixed with entitlement, rudeness fused with xenophobia.
As the group made the turn to the back nine, the match was deadlocked at all square. But if the front nine was any indication of what lay ahead, what was transpiring at Bethpage was no longer golf.

It's a team event of USA vs. Europe so the fanbases are in direct opposition. It's always been a little raucous but it's gotten a lot worse in the last 20 years or so.

It IS what we've become. I worked in and around a major national park for decades and I saw the profile of the average tourist go from respectful and interested in the environment they were visiting to complete assholes as were on display at this golf event. Seriously, this is how they treat uniformed park rangers and other employees. Been that way since about the middle of Obama's 2 terms. It got so bad since 2016 that I decided to leave the region and get away from that sort of social nightmare.

Given the guest of honor’s well-known aversion to losing gracefully, it was hardly a shock that the worst behavior broke out just as America’s chances were slipping away. But the tournament’s response to the ugly crowd conduct on Saturday was woeful. Extra security and a phalanx of New York state troopers materialized around McIlroy’s match at the turn. A couple of spectators were ejected near the main grandstands. The PGA of America said it bolstered policing and pushed more frequent spectator etiquette messages on the big screens. Fine, as far as it goes. But once a thousand people have decided a backswing is their cue, you can’t manage it with a graphic and a frown. Enforcement has to be swift, visible and consequential or it becomes permission by another name.

Sunday brought a tacit admission that the line had been crossed. The first-tee master of ceremonies, the comedian Heather McMahan, stepped down from her role after video showed her leading a chant of “Fuck you Rory!” on Saturday morning. The PGA announced her departure and apology before the singles. If the MC is amplifying the worst instincts in the building, that’s not “energy”; it’s an institutional failure.

McIlroy faced relentless heckling from Team USA fans during Saturday's four-ball match with team-mate Shane Lowry. Fuzzy Zoeller, who mocked Tiger Woods with talk about eating watermelon never was retaliated against like Rory. Rory is also one of the few PGA golfers who leans Democratic in his views. My point was, golf use to be my go-to for decent behavior by fans, no longer.

No matter who wins, does the world change? No.
Golf and all sports, in my opinion, is entertainment, a game where people can exercise their skills and others watch for vicarious thrills.
I don't understand the hostility exhibited by the crowd. Why were they ugly to the guy? Don't the players deserve respect for their skills?
Is there some underlying dispute going on between USA and the UK?
If a team wins, does that mean that they have won some sort of political victory? Does it mean that the country they are from is more righteous, or powerful, or admirable than the losing team?

Or is the game just an opportunity for unsportsmanlike people to show their ass to the world?

During the last Ryder cup in Rome, one player refused to wear a USA branded hat, complaining that they should get paid. This time around the USA team members get $500K each, they asked team Europe if they wanted to get paid, no thanks, we're playing for pride. Justin Thomas was egging the crowd on, as was captain Keegan Bradley. Imagine paying $750 for a ticket, getting drunk on overpriced beer, then getting tossed for screaming insults at Rory. On the plus side, they got to see their MAGA gawd on Friday, after having to line up for hours due to added screening for the MAGA gawd. I'm sure the MAGA gawd demanded that team USA let him play as he has won many club championships....

All the Americans are probably Republicans - there are very few Pro Golfers who support Democrats.

I will give Justin Thomas some slight credit though. He may have been egging the crowd on early, but once it got really bad, he was trying to get the crowd to quiet down for Rory to make his shots. Not to much credit though since he helped cause the issue himself.

I'm rooting for Tommy Fleetwood - one of the few pro golfers who has criticized Trump (and he was the most successful golfer on the course over the first 2 days winning all 4 of his matches)

44. MC behind vile Rory McIlroy chant at Ryder Cup unmasked as she quits job and issues grovelling apology

A club emerged on social media of the Master of Ceremonies urging the home fans to direct a foul-mouth chant at the European star

The Ryder Cup MC who caused a storm after leading Team USA fans in vulgar chants against Rory McIlroy has quit her tournament hosting role - and reportedly apologised to the Team Europe superstar.

The American actress and comedian was urging the raucous New York crowd to direct foul-mouthed chants towards the Northern Irishman and he endured relentless abuse at Bethpage Black while partnering Shane Lowry.

Organisers stepped in to address the hostile reception the 36-year-old faced, with messages on the big screens reminding spectators of proper conduct as police moved to eject troublesome supporters.

McMahan, though, fuelled the unruly atmosphere before the morning foursomes began, actively encouraging inappropriate behaviour. At the first tee, she was seen bellowing "F*** you Rory!" through a megaphone as those in the grandstands joined in.

The comedian employed to warm up the crowd at the Ryder Cup has apologised and stepped down from her job before the final day’s play after she was recorded leading a foul-mouthed Rory McIlroy chant on the first tee on Saturday.

Heather McMahan apologised to McIlroy and Ryder Cup Europe for the remarks. It took the PGA of America 20 hours to address the incident, which happened before dawn on Saturday, inviting questions about whether they were quick enough to act.

McMahan had been employed to stoke up the crowd on the first tee in an attempt to build the atmosphere, and was using a megaphone to lead them in their chants. She tried to persuade them to join her in a chorus of “Scotty! Scotty! Scheffler!” to the tune of Queen’s We Will Rock You but was booed into abandoning the effort. “Fuck you Rory!” was more popular, and became a persistent chant throughout the day. McIlroy responded by blowing the crowd kisses when he came to the tee.

As the only major "team" event in golf, the "USA! USA!" etc. chants are fine, apart from when a player's about to strike the ball. And the kind of barracking like "you missed an easier putt than this last hole!" is fair (again, not when they're about to his the ball). The dumb "fuck you" stuff is bad; the insulting stuff about a player's wife is awful. But there's no way anyone official should be taking part in it.

Keegan Bradley dumbfounds Ryder Cup onlookers with astonishing response about the New York mob

It got so bad that PGA of America chiefs had to issue on-course messages, extra security was drafted in and police dogs were even beside greens.

Yet, instead of condemning the behaviour, Bradley opted to get involved in whataboutery and even attemped to draw comparisons with Rome two years ago.

Anger is one thing, but it has spilled into obscenity. Bradley ran the length of a fairway during practice waving an American flag and his players spent the summer telling Europe it would be wild, crazy and chaotic with Bryson DeChambeau even saying they wouldn’t be ready.

But any notions of taking even a shred of responsibility for the carnage didn’t register on Saturday night as he said: “Yeah, Ryder Cups are wild. I don’t appreciate those words that you just said. I know what you’re trying to do. The Ryder Cup is full of passionate fans.”

Never played, but I used to like watching for the beautiful serene settings. Then, I learned how exclusionary, masoginistic, and racist these clubs were/are. Sure some had to be dragged into the 20th Century, at the time, so no. It's a bunch of rich white guys that tolerate the "others". A place to get away from their wives, have private "man" time sometimes with little scantily clad bunnies to ogle and where "business deals" can be made without prying eyes and the guy with the most power, ie. money can cheat without a peep. Where one can hit a miraculous hole in one every other month and make himself a golf champion because he fills out a scorecard based on the honor system of which he's totally void of.

I'll bet it used to be a nice way to get some walking, social time in. What a shame. Everything he touches.

To you guys/gals that genuinely enjoy the sport, this is not directed to you. Please enjoy the game and for you couples that play together, more power to you.

Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump
Rick Reilly

An outrageous indictment of Donald Trump's appalling behavior when it comes to golf -- on and off the green -- and what it reveals about his character.

Donald Trump loves golf. He loves to play it, buy it, build it, and operate it. He owns 14 courses around the world and runs another five, all of which he insists are the best on the planet. He also claims he's a 3 handicap, almost never loses, and has won an astonishing 18 club championships.

How much of all that is true? Almost none of it, acclaimed sportswriter Rick Reilly reveals in this unsparing look at Trump in the world of golf.

Based on Reilly's own experiences with Trump as well as interviews with over 100 golf pros, amateurs, developers, and caddies, Commander in Cheat is a startling and at times hilarious indictment of Trump and his golf game. You'll learn how Trump cheats (sometimes with the help of his caddies and Secret Service agents), lies about his scores (the "Trump Bump&quot , tells whoppers about the rank of his courses and their worth (declaring that every one of them is worth $50 million), and tramples the etiquette of the game (driving on greens doesn't help). Trump doesn't brag so much, though, about the golf contractors he stiffs, the course neighbors he intimidates, or the way his golf decisions wind up infecting his political ones.

For Trump, it's always about winning. To do it, he uses the tricks he picked up from the hustlers at the public course where he learned the game as a college kid, and then polished as one of the most bombastic businessmen of our time. As Reilly writes, "Golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a man." Commander in Cheat "paints a side-splitting portrait of a congenital cheater" (Esquire), revealing all kinds of unsightly truths Trump has been hiding.

By the time Europe finished the job, finally, on Sunday, the golf had the last word. But until the thrilling denouement, the lasting memory of this Ryder Cup threatened not to be a single swing of the club so much as the ugly backdrop: galleries that drifted from partisan into venomous and the organizers who let the line slide until it snapped.

It didn’t happen all at once. For the first day and a half of golf’s most intense rivalry, it was New York-loud without being unruly. Then Saturday afternoon arrived and the tenor shifted. Rory McIlroy, the visiting lightning rod, kept stepping off shots as volleys of abuse landed in the quiet of his pre-shot routine. Shane Lowry played teammate and minder. Justin Thomas, not exactly a shrinking violet, began shushing his own end of the grandstand so his opponents could putt.

Ryder Cup MC apologises and steps down over foul-mouthed McIlroy chant

There’s a difference between atmosphere and interference, and Bethpage spent too much of the weekend blurring the two. Boos during practice swings and the sing-song “YEW-ESS-AY! YEW-ESS-AY!” after a European miss were tiresome, but survivable. What crept in on Saturday was different: insults aimed at players’ wives, homophobic slurs, cheap shots at McIlroy’s nationality dripping with tiresome stereotypes, gleeful reminders of Pinehurst the moment McIlroy crouched over anything inside five feet.
