Amazon laid off some employees with early-morning text messages By Eugene Kim, 23 hrs ago

"
Amazon laid off 14,000 employees on Tuesday.
Some employees learned about their termination through early-morning text messages.
The texts were intended to prevent affected employees from being unable to badge into the office.
On Tuesday morning, some Amazon employees learned they had lost their jobs — through text messages.

Amazon sent two text messages early Tuesday to inform employees their jobs had been eliminated, according to people familiar with the matter and screenshots reviewed by Business Insider.
One message urged affected employees to check their personal or work email before coming to the office. A second text directed them to call a help desk if they hadn't received "an email message about your role."

The texts, sent shortly after email notifications, were intended to prevent laid-off employees from arriving at the office and discovering their badges no longer worked, one of the people said."

My personal comment. I am strongly considering canceling my Amazon Prime account.

in the biggest bestest baddest economy, how is this possible ?

Amazon is a public traded company, but also is a us government subsidy welfare recipient from anywhere to 5.9 to 14 billion dollars.

I wonder what those 14 thousand people will do? hope they don't apply for SNAP benefits

There are dozens of free video alternatives to Prime Video(Tubi, Pluto, Roku and others). I'm finding my library has Hoopla and Kanopy, which have EVERYTHING and for free.

I quit Amazon altogether at the beginning of the year. It was hard at first but I find that you can buy direct from most companies. (I still use Amazon to shop, and then go directly to the company to buy.) I find I do MUCH less impulse buying and it's saving me money. Can't seem to find my orthotics anywhere else, but they won't wear out for a while, so I have time to look.

Good luck if you choose to walk away from those assholes.
