Rep. Troy Nehls announces he'll retire at end of current term, adding to number of GOP departures from Congress

Nehls is my congresscritter. He is an asshole. Rumors are that Nehls timed his announcement to keep other GOP types from running and is going to endorse his asshole brother, Trevor. Trevor ran for sheriff and got beat a couple of cycles ago.

U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Richmond, a hard-line conservative and one of President Donald Trump’s most ardent allies in Congress, will retire at the end of his current term.

The three-term Republican, who represents a swath of Houston’s southern suburbs, announced the decision on social media Saturday morning, highlighting his police and military record. Before serving in Congress, Nehls had been sheriff of Fort Bend County. ....

Nehls was first elected in 2020 and was a member of the House Freedom Caucus, the party’s rightmost wing that has frequently antagonized GOP leadership. He left the group last year, citing differences in philosophy.

Nehls has been embroiled in personal controversies in recent years. In 2024, the House Ethics Committee investigated his campaign finance records after an audit found evidence he had used funds on rent payments to his own company. Nehls filed a lawsuit in federal court alleging Capitol police had illegally searched his office. The complaint was later dismissed.

The filing deadline to replace Troy Nehls is December 8. Troy Nehls delayed the announcement to help his twin brother run for this seat. Trever Nehls ran for county sheriff a couple of cycles ago and got beaten. Both Nehls brothers are assholes.

Yet another Republican congressman announced he will be retiring, leading to speculation running rampant online.....

But a lot of commenters weren't buying the lawmaker's reasoning.

Shea Jordan Smith, a popular user formerly associated with Empower Project, responded with, "Troy, it’s cute that you’re wrapping this up like some noble farewell, but let’s be real here: this ain’t about 'family time.'"

"This is about clocking out the second your congressional pension fully vests and your lifetime taxpayer-funded healthcare kicks in," Smith added.

Author Timothy Peterson agreed, writing simply, "Pension fully vested and lifetime taxpayer funded healthcare secured => got what you came for, time to leave."

A purported constituent of Nehls, Dawn Morrow, replied with, "This is the only thing you have done as my representative that has made me happy."....

"May 2024: Rep. Troy Nehls investigated over allegations he used campaign money to pay rent to his own company," he wrote, linking to a story about the investigation. "Today he announced his retirement."
