Some very interesting remarks in the Comments section, from people whose cities did not go down this particular avenue to exploitation ... My own parents have told me about how they used to take electric streetcars everywhere in downtown Birmingham AL ... I remembered them as scary because of the noise and sparks they made as they switched lines at intersections.
