A persistent theme seems to run through Democratic circles from time to time - the argument that older folks need to get the hell out of the way and make room for the young. It is an argument premised on the notion that older folks (generally defined as anyone older than the younger person demanding change, with special exception for Bernie Sanders because, well, he is Bernie Sanders) aren't doing anything other than mucking about and waiting to die.
So, say the young, why not simply accelerate the process and get on with the anointing of a new generation of bosses now rather than later? After all, the young have been waiting all of five, ten or - gasp! - fifteen years since graduating from high school to take the reigns of power. Crazy. Almost as insane as the notion of walking four blocks rather than simply taking an Uber. Almost as wild as a prospective employer expecting you to be able to read cursive or understand an analog clock.
This process of pushing out old folks is easier said than done though. For some odd reason, old people really don't seem to want to budge. They're always bringing up their years of experience and their "wisdom" (all of which is easily replicated by AI). They're always droning on about how they "earned" their nest eggs (which could more wisely be invested in crypto in the hands of their kids). They have houses that are too big for them. Unfortunately, they'll have to die before their kids can inherit those houses. It's all just so annoying, you know?
So, what's a young person to do other than cajole, scold and/or guilt trip all these old folks at every step until they finally get the hell out of the way. That is the only course of action. Because this current generation of young people is completely different than any prior generation of young people. It's just so much harder for them than it was for earlier generations who only had to worry about little things like being drafted into military service against their will or economic malaise so bad that "Help Wanted" signs simply didn't exist.
Yes. A change in generational perspective within the Democratic Party is most certainly needed.

(78,855 posts)In my opinion, it comes down to the individual politician. Bernie, for example, is progressive, even though many of the kids here (anyone under 65) would consider him old. There are some sticks in the mud, living off the fat of the land, that voters should give their pension plans, to paraphrase Muhammad Ali. People of my generation are, as an old friend who visited me today said, in the pre-dead phase of our lives, and need to recognize that the younger generations inhabit a world that is very different from the one we remember. At the same time, we need to remain focused on the fact that our music was way, way better.
