Most categories moved higher; restaurant prices rose as well
It's bad enough that grocery prices went up it's another thing when the President of the United States stands there before the press and lies to the American people and proclaims prices have gone down dramatically under his leadership.
The story:
Grocery prices posted their largest month-to-month increase in more than three years in December, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Tuesday.
Food-at-home prices jumped 0.7%, up from 0.3% in September, the last month for which Consumer Price Index data were released before the government shutdown. Food-at-home prices last rose 0.7% or more in late 2022, when they increased 0.7% in both August and September. The last time the increase exceeded 0.7% was July 2022, when prices rose 1.3%.

(3,187 posts)...particularly when it comes to coffee. The size of bags has been shrinking for a while now (they were 16 ounces, then 12, now it's often 10.5). More recently, they started shipping K-Cups in packages of ten instead of a dozen. There were a few holdouts, including Eight o Clock (IIRC), but it looks like everyone is shrinking their package sizes now. Because of this, I'm only buying coffee from Costco.

(40,052 posts)The other obvious one to me is ice cream. No such thing as a half gallon any more. Lots of little single serving cartons in stores lately, too.

(130,390 posts)a package of ground turkey goes from 2.89 to 3.59, a bagged salad mix from 3.49 to 4.59, a bag of sugar from 4.49 to 4.99, the math I learned back in the last millenium tells me that is more than 0.7%. And these increases were between one shopping trip and the next several days later.

(7,561 posts)Angel Soft bathroom tissue. Koch brothers product... ptthy! But, it was softer than the other similarly priced bathroom tissue, and we were low on money at the time and tightening our belts already. Angel Soft bathroom tissue was 79 cents for 4 rolls. The last time I bought it... comparing prices... it was $2.39. That's a hell of a lot more than .07%! Of course, what else would you expect from one of the founders and supporters of Project 2025!

Not under this Administration.

(8,828 posts)The hotdogs I buy went up about $2 for a pkg. of 8 over the last 2 months. Bread has gone up, so has beef, so has coffee. All the things we buy on a regular basis are more expensive now.
You can fill a single bag of groceries for $60-70 dollars easy.; even $100 depending on what we buy.
Trump can say whatever he wants, but nothing he says can change the fact that our grocery money buys a lot less now.

(7,561 posts)was $10.99. For ONE pound. Hamburger used to be the meat of choice because it was so cheap, and you could do so much with it. Chicken is no better. I remember when Obama's finance people were talking about changing the price index (or whatever it's called... I can't think this early in the morning!)... they said people would just move from the more expensive to a lesser expense meat. There is no such thing.
I bought a package of ham hocks the other day for a pot of beans. The damn ham hocks were over $10! They're getting premium prices from us for pigs feet! And I have to fight back the tears for the pig, AND the price.

(8,828 posts)With all the deportations, meat packing plants are getting hard hit, and that's resulting in higher prices for the workers they can get.
Every aspect of the food chain, from farm to supermarket, has a large number of immigrant workers, both legal and undocumented.
Of course, ICE doesn't make a distinction.
When will the lack of workers reach the point where it disrupts the food chain?

(36 posts)Costco K cup coffee went from 24.99 to 31.99 and is now 43.99. My wife nixed buying it. Went back to ground Folgers and drip coffeemaker. Bought flavored syrup to add to plain half and half. Everything is ridiculous, beef prices are nuts. When buying a steak is cheaper than hamburger, it's over. A pack of hot dogs $8.00, buns 4 dollars. So Emperor God-lite Prezinut your claim of cheaper groceries is Massive Elephant Dung.

I'm waiting for Orange Jesus to "Truth" out that he just fed 5,000 people with only five loaves and two fish and still had twelve baskets full of broken pieces left over--and then tell us nobody's ever heard of such a thing before; it's a miracle really; some are saying miracle; a word nobody uses anymore. Negeflation he will proclaim it!
And the GOP all ate and were satisfied....
It's a collective delusion; I'm telling ya....

(7,561 posts)The mental gymnastics between healthcare bills and grocery bills is not fair to someone turning 70 tomorrow! When does MY brain get a chance to rest and I just get to "exist" without someone hounding me for more money, that isn't coming, despite working and paying SS since I was 14!
