NAACP: Trump's scheme to "nationalize elections" is a continuation of his same anti-democratic playbook

NAACP @NAACP
NAACP condemns President Trump’s outrageous and dangerous suggestion to "nationalize" elections. This reckless rhetoric is a blatant assault on the Constitution and a continuation of anti-democratic tactics that threaten the very foundation of our democracy.

President and CEO @DerrickNAACP said it best:

"We’ve taken Trump to court before – and we’ve won, even in the Supreme Court. If necessary, we’ll take him to court again, and we’ll win again."

NAACP Condemns Trump's Call to 'Nationalize' Elections

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The NAACP condemns in the strongest possible terms President Donald Trump's outrageous and dangerous rhetoric suggesting the federal government should "nationalize" elections. This is a desperate attempt to continue to weaken and ultimately destroy the very foundations of our democracy.

Such statements are not only reckless, they are a blatant assault on the Constitution and a continuation of the same anti-democratic playbook that has fueled voter suppression, election sabotage, and authoritarian extremism across the country.

"This serves as yet another reminder that the Trump Administration is only looking to exhaust our nation with these deplorable and unconstitutional antics in hopes that we will grow tired and concede," said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. "Unfortunate for them, we are wide awake, and we will never surrender something our people fought, bled, and died for. We've taken Trump to court before – and we've won, even in the Supreme Court. If necessary, we'll take him to court again, and we'll win again."

For generations, Black Americans and our allies have stood on the front lines of the struggle for voting rights, fair representation, and true democracy. Any effort to seize or manipulate the electoral process for political gain is an affront to those sacrifices and an insult to every voter in this nation.

Let there be no confusion: the NAACP is prepared to take any and all legal actions necessary to ensure that our democracy remains where it has always belonged — with we the people.

We will not be intimidated. We will not be distracted. And we will not allow anyone, no matter how powerful, to dismantle the democratic rights that generations before us secured at so great a cost.

Trump raises concern for Black voters after threat to ‘nationalize’ elections, seizing ballots in Atlanta

“The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over.’ We should take over the voting, the voting in at least many — 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting,” Trump told “The Dan Bongino Show” podcast, hosted by his former Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday that the president was referring to the SAVE Act, a Republican-proposed bill that would require voters to present ID and proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. However, the bill does not explain the president’s suggestion that only 15 states should be nationalized rather than all states. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the SAVE Act “Jim Crow 2.0.”

Congress will not pass any bill nationalizing elections in any state.

Repubs would probably vote for it. Dems could fillibuster in the Senate, but even that could be iffy.

But I don’t believe such a bill would even make it out of committee.

They just lost a seat in the TX legislature to a Dem in a heavy Trump district, with a 30+ point swing.

Do you think they will nationalize voting in Texas?

If this is they’re fallback strategy, that’s what they are going to have to consider, because they are going to lose seats in red states by the fistful in November.
