JD Vance loudly booed at the Winter Olympics today.

Vice President JD Vance endured a chorus of boos as US athletes began their march at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, after Israeli athletes faced the same negative welcome.
The Independents Flo Clifford reported from inside San Siro, A largely positive reception for the US contingent - there are thousands of American fans in the stadium - but very definite boos and jeers for vice president JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, who the camera pans to waving American flags for a few brief seconds.
Viewers at home noted hearing the boos on social media as well. It comes after IOC president Kirsty Coventry urged spectators to be respectful toward US athletes after worldwide backlash over immigration raids and the killing of two Americans by border officers in Minnesota.
Vance faced a tense visit to the city after Milans mayor, Beppe Sala, was among those to condemn ICE, describing it as a militia that kills.

(Obviously, I would not want to see the orange blob even more if that is possible)
At least it was pretty clear on tv and to the announcers (and hopefully all those marching) that the boos were directed at Vance and not US athletes.

(21,823 posts)I've followed the Olympics, summer and winter, since Munich and I've never seen the US delegation booed anywhere. That's how far down the shit pipe we've gone.

(55,312 posts)the booing was audible only after they showed Vance and his wife on screen, up until then cheers could be heard as the US athletes entered.
But depending on their coverage they might not have even shown Vance onscreen, so the assumption would be the athletes were getting booed.
Spazito
(55,312 posts)they should have heard the cheers first because the boos started well after the US team was being showcased.
watching it on TV I booed when I saw him. What the hell, is what I muttered to myself.

(40,714 posts)It breaks my heart that the American athletes thought they were being boo'd. It wasn't them at all.
All the cheers were for them. All the boo's were for Vance.

The mayor of Milan (on the left) was vocally opposed. Meloni was actually more of an asskisser with Vance than usual today:
We met with the Vice President last time in Rome on the occasion of the installation to the papacy of Pope Leo, and today we meet again for the opening ceremony of the Olympics. They are two events that speak to a system of values that Europe and the United States hold in common (we hold together), that the West holds in common, that is the clear basis of our cooperation, of our friendship, and of the future that we want to build together."
There's a lot of code in this statement: to associate the papacy with Europe is odd, but it's part of Meloni's brand of Euro-supremacist Catholicism. But to associate the Olympics with "the West" (l'Occidente) is more open white supremacy than Meloni usually goes in for in public. That she's comfortable doing this white supremacist dance in front of Vance tells you everything you need to know about that clown.

(40,714 posts)But until then, here's what I THINK happened:
The USA athletes came out as the third-to-last group on the main stage. Most of the people in the audience applauded USA. But then they showed Vance and his wife (waving their flags) up on the big TV screen, and people saw them and boo'd for JD Vance.
Maybe it was misunderstood - maybe people thought the audience was booing for the athletes, but I don't think that's what happened. I don't want the athletes to think that, anyway. The American teams get a lot of respect at the Olympics, and most of the athletes don't give a shit about politics anyway.
I want to watch the opening show for myself and see what really happened. I have always loved the Olympics and it breaks my heart that the MAGA politics have put this whole black cloud over everything.
