President Donald Trump reportedly wants his name on New Yorks Penn Station and Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C.
Trump told Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) that he would be willing to release federal funding for the Gateway tunnel project ― which the president froze last year ― in return for renaming the two transit hubs after him, according to a story first reported by Punchbowl News and later confirmed by CNN and NBC, among others.

Trump even added his name to the U.S. Institute of Peace building and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. After artists objected to the latter and canceled their performances at the venue, the president announced a two-year shutdown for renovations.
Now, Trump is reportedly trying to make previously approved funds for the Gateway project contingent on adding his name to more places.
Schumer has reportedly rejected the offer.

(6,533 posts)Seriously I dont know why government can be allowed to even consider such blackmail.
And why arent the Dem Senators, Congresspeople, and Governors from these states not holding joint press conferences? Why arent they standing on the steps of the Capitol making some good trouble? Whats the actual coordinated plan on these things? Maybe stuff is happening but I only see some tweeted and then maybe one or two Democrats on a News program making some comment. Id like to see real outrage I guess because I feel it and Im still on the street in my neighborhood with my sign at our Defend Democracy days.

Answer 1: The Supreme Court gave him immunity for any official action in his role as President. So in essence, legally, he can do what he wants.
Answer 2: Even before he had immunity, he was impeached for exactly this (regarding funds to Ukraine). Immunity probably does not prevent impeachment. But it takes 2/3 vote to be convicted, so that's toothless as well. So in essence, again, he can do what he wants.

(15,442 posts)To "faithfully execute the laws passed by Congress."
Nevertheless, this president has not only been withholding funds to punish his political opponents, he has been decimating agencies created by Congress -- such as USAID -- which is not within his Constitutional power.
It is up to Congress and the courts to assert their own powers and restore the checks & balances crafted by America's Founders to ensure what's happening now cannot happen.
But our Constitutional rule of law only works as long as good faith public servants uphold their sworn oaths to abide by it. Congress has the oversight authority and the power to remove a president for high crimes and misdemeanors, but the Republican majority House & Senate have, with rare exception, been doing the bidding of this president. The Justice Dept has become a tool of his vengeance, and the Supreme Court has given him full immunity from being prosecuted for crimes committed as "presidential acts."
Functionally, this country is being ruled by a dictator -- a vindictive malignant narcissist who is descending into madness, using his office to enrich himself, feed the bottomless pit of his ego, and punish his enemies.
While Republicans control both houses of Congress and ignore their own sworn oaths, there is very little Democrats can do about this. I agree they should hold a joint press conference over this latest outrage, but for more than a year now we have been barraged by one outrage after another.
This POtuS and his apparatchiks have been "flooding the zone with shit" to overwhelm the opposition, and to normalize what would have been unimaginable under any other administration.
To the 5 year old, I say: America is in deep doo-doo.

(6,533 posts)could be so incredibly fragile? Id say we dont just need a change of leadership but a whole new foundation to keep America alive. This is not just Trump. Should he disappear the black hole will still exist.

(15,442 posts)You're right, the black hole exists with or without Trump. He is a symptom of the rot in our system, including an ignorant public susceptible to propaganda and charlatans.
This last year has been a shock to so much that has been taken for granted, and the consequences will hit nearly everyone regardless of who they voted for -- including those who didn't bother to vote.
In every crisis is an opportunity. Perhaps a shock like this was necessary to shake the American people out of their complacency, indulgences, and feckless disregard for their privilege and responsibility as citizens.
All of us need to be engaged to not only repair the damage, but to build a better and more sustainable future. Our Democratic Party needs to step up and take full advantage of this opportunity. We need a new generation of leaders with clear heads, vision, and the smarts to chart the course ahead.
