I can understand supporting his policies as whacked as they are to me. But shouldn't the racism be a deal breaker? Judging by 2024 apparently not?

When people transcend race, gender, etc. they sometimes conclude that race must not be a factor in success, when really they just happened to hit the sweet spot with some (usually politically motivated) "sponsor" or some never-to-occur-again golden opportunity. Others succeed because they are exceptionally capable and determined, but those who don't succeed have all kinds of reasons why they didn't -- often the malignant interference of others, rather than any lack of ability or determination on their part. But when one big-mouthed Uglican with a big megaphone (the Party will provide if needed) says "Look at me ! I'm Black/Latino/Female/etc. and I succeeded, so that can't be it !" all the mouth-breathing MAGAts uncritically accept this as Gospel, even though it doesn't survive the most minimal critical analysis. (Of course, "critical analysis" is not their forte, nor do most really understand what it means.)

DUer Lapfog_1 posted an interesting essay on this here -- it's worth a read. When you try to convince people that things like DEI and fair taxation of billionaires and preservation of voting rights and civil rights are a good thing, and they believe their own experiences say otherwise (at least when remedies are considered on a topic by topic basis), you won't easily convince them to change their minds. Most people just can't see that their own personal anecdotes just aren't representative*. You have to consider the larger picture(s), and many can't, or won't; massive disinformation by FOX and Uglican "influencers" have been deliberately working to sabotage any such attempts to do so. To see the biggest picture, we all need to look together -- solo efforts just aren't good enough. You have to listen to others whose experiences differ from yours (the more the better, mostly) and search for a consensus explanation, and plan for action. MAGAts don't believe in consensus, only proclamations From On High, which gives them a sort of pathological unity, like zombies all controlled by the same evil master.
