Absolutely nothing against Bad Bunny, but ....

Last edited Sun Feb 8, 2026, 06:58 PM - Edit history (1)

Can we also get some love for Green Day? Fighting the good fight for decades, and I guarantee they will not hold back today. Also, they are a local band (SF Bay Area) that I grew up with.

Also, for what it's worth, Go Seahawks! Edited to add that I watched it live on local NBC TV and I didn't notice, but now I'm reading that networks muted some of the lyrics to American Idiot. Don't know if that's true or not.

I have liked them for a long time. I am older but there was just something about them, then came the Broadway show (wish I could have seen it). Then my son, in Kansas City, who was driving for one of the car services picked Tre Cool from the airport for a Kansas City gig, they stopped at my sons favorite club where he played the most and I got a picture of Tre with my son. Always liked them.

They could do American Idiot all over again.

Green Day is a pre-show, I believe. I don't know how this will be covered.

With most of the hype focusing on the halftime show, I wonder if Green Day will surprise some people.

I also wonder about the NFL. Forever, they have been the embodiment of the plantation mentality. Put those black bodies to work. And even be nice to them is they don't get too uppity, like Colin Karppernick. And start every show with an over-the-top display of the armed forces, a not-so-subtle reminder that the NFL is aligned with the power of the state.

Maybe something is changing here. In the same way we are witness to MASSIVE over-performance in practically every special election, is the NFL sensing that their customers are getting really angry with the direction of the government? Is the NFL trying to distance itself from the power of the state?

Playing the National Anthem at sporting events. It’s just kinda stupid. I mean what does it have to do with the sports we’re there to watch? Let’s get to it and save the song for more appropriate events.

That this is not done at professional sporting events in Europe (that I’m aware of). Only if the national teams are playing. At that point, you can play Flower of Scotland as many times as possible, as it’s one of the best anthems in the world (

The "tradition" of the anthem before games was a jingoistic money scrounge coordinated by MLB to encourage war bind sales during WW I. And, what a coincidence, they had booths set up right at the ballpark where you could buy them.
It was never about patriotism. It was about money.
Should have ended in 1919, yet here we are 107 years later.
And BTW, nobody does the anthem right. It's always done too slow.

I'm a German expat. Hubby was in the Air Force and we met at a base in Germany. We got married in '84, got reassigned to McConnell AFB in Wichita, KS in 85. Both basically kids. 22 and 19. Hubby was a born and raised New Englander. Bostonian, to be exact.

My first introduction to American Football was Superbowl XX. Bears vs Patriots. The Pats were a long shot and it came true when they lost to the Bears and Refrigerator Perry 46-10. I was so mad I threw the tv remote against the wall, scaring the baby and the cats. (Hubby was working the overnight shift on base, so he couldn't watch. He might not have survived the heartache)

That was my start as a Pats fan. I fell in love with the team, the game, and never looked back. It was never a single player or coach for me. (I even hated Brady when he had the MAGA hat in his locker and when he went to the Bucs.)

As to Kraft; he does a lot of good in the community and since he got remarried, has managed to stay mostly clear of politics. He was a bit unmoored when his rock, Myra, passed away and made bad choices. But overall, he hasn't been any worse than the other billionaire owners of NFL teams. (Actually, he has been discriminated against within the league because he's Jewish, imo.)

A zydeco show in New Orleans would have been amazing. (They only did a little before the game). Detroit should have had Motown. Almost every area in the country has music associated with it.

It might also get rid of the arguments. I have nothing against Bad Bunny, he seems great, but we are currently just showcasing acts Jay-Z has signed, which limits variety and eliminates local flavor.

Sun Feb 8, 2026, 04:16 PM

They took a lot of shit for "selling out" back in the day, but they have been MORE punk than most punk bands EVER. Doing American Idiot put their careers on the line. They have called out fascism every second of every day, painting themselves as targets, enemies of the oligarchy. Yet, they endure. They could have just taken soft stands and write just a bunch of feel-good tunes w/ much different lyrics, but they chose to speak truth to power. The idea to "shut up and sing" is not anything followed by BJ, Tre and Mike. They are so badass.

Also, recall how they took the homosexual band out on tour with them back in the 1990s. There were promoters literally telling Green Day to nix Pansy Division from the bill, they were not allowed to play. What did Green Day do? Tell those people to fuck off, Pansy Division either plays or we won't.

Green Day has earned my undying respect as a fan of metal and punk rock. And they also write some incredible music. Billie Joe is arguably my favorite punk writer along with the Gurewitz/Graffin Bad Religion combo and Deryck Whibley of Sum 41.

Which probably only matters to olderish NYC'rs and workers from the Tri-State area down there then.
But J&R started as a modest store stereo equipment first floor, vinyl (early '70's) in the basement. Expanded to a much bigger floor and real big basement, then multi stores on the same block added as times progressed - cassettes, CD's, DVD's. It was a fun place.

They'd hold these mini concerts on the streets. I think I saw Chick Corea, as well. Good times!

I told him he needs to meet "The Drop Kick Murpheys," Rage Against the Machine," Neil young, and The Boss, Bruce Springsteen (to name a few). Feel free to add suggestions for me to pass on!
