WP Talarico Profile: "Will Texas elect a Democratic senator?"
The last time a Democrat won a Senate race in Texas, James Talarico was not even born yet.
The 36-year-old state representative is painfully aware of that as he finds himself at the center of a raging debate over how Democrats can best energize their voters and win back power after their disappointing 2024 losses. He is stepping onto the national scene at a time when his party is eager for younger, more dynamic leaders, especially in red states where its brand has suffered for decades.
I think I underestimated how much people are hungry for something new and fresh and different in the Democratic Party, Talarico said, hopeful but still clear-eyed about the potential dangers of President Donald Trumps second term. I dont know if people want fighting just for fightings sake, but they do want their leaders to feel the urgency and meet the moment.
Talarico entered the Senate race in September, when his main primary opponent was former congressman Colin Allred, the partys unsuccessful 2024 nominee and a helpful foil for Talaricos pitch for fresh-faced statewide leadership. But the primary saw a shake-up on the last day of candidate filing in December, when Allred dropped out to make way for an 11th-hour bid by Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a brash national star known for her rhetorical bombast toward Trump and other prominent Republicans.
