US House approves bill mandating proof of citizenship for voting in federal elections

WASHINGTON The U.S. House passed legislation Wednesday that would require the public to produce a passport or birth certificate in most cases to register to vote, less than a year out from November midterm elections.
The 218-213 vote split mostly along party lines, with one Democrat, Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, breaking with his party to support the measure. One Republican, North Carolinas Greg Murphy, did not vote.
Republicans argued the bill, dubbed by House Republicans as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or the SAVE America Act, will prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections, which is already illegal and rare.

But yes, Republicans are trying to turn "this country into a fascist Russian State."
But as you point out: it is not going to affect only Democratic-leaning voters. There are plenty of Rs that will not be able to jump through the hoop as well.

(10,247 posts)Donald John and the Repiggies rely a lot on uneducated white voters. Just how.many of them can cough up birth certificates and passports at the polling booths?
This legislation will cause trouble for some Latinos in border states. But heres the thing: thanks to the increasingly stringent border controls shoved down our throats by the Rethuglies, those Latinos with friends and loved ones on the other side of the border probably possess passports and other proofs of citizenship that loyal MAGAs like Clem and Lester probably lack.
IMO Democratic grass-roots organizations ought to start encouraging progressive voters to get proofs of citizenship ASAP. This might be someplace where grass-roots organizing can trump Republican astroturfing.

(854 posts)...did not vote reliably. They were not part of the traditional country club Republican power center that definitely had the resources and organization to easily overcome a law like this.
But the new Republican base does not seem as organized or responsible.
I think you are right that a lot of immigrants are going to be better prepared than people in rural areas that have gotten by on white privilege and have never had to prove--or even thought about--their citizenship.
Ah, the law of unintended consequences....

(244 posts)Does anybody want to bet that Republicans would end up with a net loss with this bill because their voters would be too stupid to realize they needed to show up to the polls with something besides their ID?
Do you think the average Democrat or Republican is more likely to have a passport?
Do you think the average married woman is more likely to have a passport or have kept their name if they are a Democrat or a Republican?
Republicans think Democrats benefit from non-citizens who vote. That's just BS, and they are try to shoot themselves in the foot for it.
