DHS Funding Update: Turning up the heat on Republicans in Congress

https://indivisible.actionkit.com/mailings/view/124386

DU'ers!

Trump told a lot of lies in his angry rant of a State of the Union last night. Amongst them: his claim that Dems are responsible for the weeks-long shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.

Fortunately, it’s not our job to factcheck Trump. But for those who haven’t been paying close attention, Dems actually introduced a bill that would have funded all of DHS (FEMA, TSA, Coast Guard, etc.) with the exception of ICE, Border Patrol, and Kristi Noem’s Office of the Secretary. Republicans are refusing to bring it up for a vote.

Republicans are keeping DHS unfunded because they will not entertain any bill that protects communities from ICE and Border Patrol terror. They are demanding that ICE stays masked, gets to enter hospitals and schools at will, and can continue unconstitutionally snatching people off the streets and from their homes without a warrant.

Trump’s lies are aimed at taking the heat off himself and Republicans, because they are losing the political battle over DHS funding. So we need to turn the heat up -- and make it clear to Republicans in Congress that their constituents aren’t fooled by the president’s BS.

1️⃣ Send an email to your Members of Congress today.* Let them know that the pressure isn’t dying down.

2️⃣ Call your Senators and Representative. Leave them a message or call them during business hours.

3️⃣ Join our phonebank on Tuesday March 3rd. We’re calling constituents in key red states and encouraging them to contact their senators. The more folks we can get to take action, the faster Republicans will back down.

Keep up the pressure on your Members of Congress and let them know we won’t back down until they end the violence that ICE and Border Patrol are inflicting on our communities.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team

*This email was sent to Indivisibles in Republican states and districts, (**) but our email tool and call scripts work for both Democratic and Republican Members of Congress. If you have Dem MoC’s feel free to contact them as well to encourage them to keep fighting!

** Yes, and the California referendum made my shit-kicker district even redder, in order to flip some purple districts. Frickin horses and bunny rabbits here got more brains than the **************** magats.

FYI, this is the email script.

Dear Senator/Representative,

As your constituent, I urge you to ensure the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security halts ICE and Border Patrol’s terror campaign and protects our communities.

Alex Pretti and Renee Good’s killings are unacceptable. Enough is enough. This is a result of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies that put everyday people at risk. You cannot stand by while ICE continues to harm communities across the country.

I am counting on you to support a new DHS appropriations bill that, at minimum:

Ensures there is not one penny more for ICE or CBP
Pulls ICE and Border Patrol out of Minneapolis and the rest of our communities
Prevents ICE or Border Patrol enforcement at designated ‘sensitive locations’ such as houses of worship, day cares, and hospitals
Restricts ICE and Border Patrol’s ability to target people based on their race, language or accent, place of employment, or location at the time of the apprehension
Ends the administration’s unlawful practice of warrantless home entry and arrests

Every member of Congress must insist on real limits and accountability before any funding is approved.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to see you standing up for the safety, dignity, and rights of all people in our communities.

And the phone scripts.

Senators.

Here's Your Script:

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a constituent from [Your City, State].

I’m calling to urge Senator [Name] to refuse to vote for any appropriations bill funding the Department of Homeland Security that fails to rein in ICE.

Alex Pretti and Renee Good’s killings are unacceptable. Enough is enough.

We can’t wait around while ICE harms more people. Senator [NAME] must demand ironclad restrictions on ICE and Border Patrol, including getting ICE and CBP out of our communities, ending the blank check for their brutality, and creating clear guardrails to stop warrantless arrests, profiling, and enforcement at sensitive locations like schools or hospitals.

Thank you.

Representative:

Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a constituent from [Your City, State].

I’m calling to urge Representative [Name] to refuse to vote for any appropriations bill funding the Department of Homeland Security that fails to rein in ICE.

Alex Pretti and Renee Good’s killings are unacceptable. Enough is enough.

We can’t wait around while ICE harms more people. Representative [NAME] must demand ironclad restrictions on ICE and Border Patrol, including getting ICE and Border Patrol out of our communities, ending the blank check for their brutality, and creating clear guardrails to stop warrantless arrests, profiling, and enforcement at sensitive locations like schools or hospitals.

The No Kings Map is Live!

Hundreds of nonviolent protests are already planned for No Kings Day on March 28, and more are being added by the hour.
