My Iranian friend is doing the Trump dance

I have a good friend that is living in the US on a green card. They are from Iran. We have talked from time to time about how troubled they have been about their home country and their fears for their family there.

This week they have been posting a lot of support for Trump and going to these marches supporting what has just happened. They are over the top happy. I didn’t see them becoming a Trump supporter.

Anyone else having this experience? What do you make of it? Why do you think about all these marches with hundreds of thousands of people all over the world marching with flags from Iran, US & Israel? It is something I never expected to see.

Assassinating foreign leaders, doesn’t automatically mean these governments themselves are ready to give up their political structures.

If Iranians (in Iran) are in widespread revolt, then it might have done something to change Iran.

2. It is a very complicated picture, essentially for many Iranians in the

US, especially LA.

Many want the current Iranian regime gone, and that is why you are probably seeing your friend glad that it might be happening.

The problem is this may not go as your friend anticipates, and may make things worse unless a replacement government is put in place.

This could very easily devolve into a Civil War, and I wouldn’t count on trump preventing that.

The Middle East has been a powderkeg of war FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS! It hasn't gotten better because of Western involvement. It's just been milked for resources.

For that matter, the entire African continent. We only get involved in their wars if there's something in it for "American Interests" is, the billionaire class whose blood is NEVER SHED.

12. I trust my friend

I trust my friend to share her true feelings. We have talked about many difficult things through the years. What has happened to her family is more important to her than her green card.

She very much wants to go home to Iran. She would not be safe if she went back to the Iran of last week. She has hope that she might be able to go home.

She has shared with many bowls of Ash Reshteh after I found a source for the authentic noodles.

I am stepping back and listening to her. I am going to share her hope while I also fear for the future. I care about my friend even as I try to sort things out.

5. Most Venezuelans in South Florida celebrated Trump's "invasion" of their country and Maduro's capture.

Many Cuban-Americans in Miami will celebrate wildly if/when Trump invades Cuba, takes out the existing communist regime and replaces it with U.S.-backed anti-Castro hardliners.

13. And, of course, most of the Venezuelans in Miami

are immigrants from the upper classes who flourished under the regimes before Chávez. And most of the older Cuban immigrants were from the upper classes who flourished under the US backed dictator Batista. After the economic ruin which comes from decades of US sanctions probably many immigrants and people still in those countries would be ready to submit to US domination.

8. I have a friend, former co-worker from Iran

He hates Trump but hates the Iranian theocratic government massively as well. He still has family in Tehran and is very happy about Khamenei being killed and supports the bombing.

10. The US has immigrants from many countries

with repressive, authoritarian regimes, often these regimes were put in place or propped up by the US.
When these regimes are toppled many immigrants will support whichever president was behind the coup.
It's probably asking too much for many of these immigrants to prefer a party which is pro-lgbtq+, pro-women's choice, pro-minority rights in the US, but which didn't knock off the dictator in their home country to a party which is actively trying to expand authoritarianism in the US, but did knock off their home country dictator.

18. More than one thing true at the same time?

Maybe more than one thing can be true at the same time. It certainly seems that knocking off the leadership of Iran has the potential be to better for women and gays in Iran. Things have been beyond horrible for them. Time will tell. The US doesn’t have a great record with regime change.

I do think it is too much to ask of someone to give up hope when they have been oppressed in such a brutal fashion. I think is it probably ok with me to wrestle with conflicting feelings. I don’t want things to get worse for the people in Iran which puts me in the uncomfortable position of hoping Trump succeeds now that we are in it. The futures of real people are on the line. That being said, I will never wear a dumb red and white hat.

19. This is the third time that the US has succeeded in

regime change in Iran. The other two times (both under Republican presidents) it didn't work well, I can't imagine that this time will be better. Perhaps things may get better for women, I highly doubt they will get better for gays.
