Trump: "I find that people that win, it's much easier to lead when you're successful. Vince Lombardi was a very tough person. He was a violent guy, actually. I knew him. But he won and he got away with things because he won."

I'm trying to imagine why Vince Lombardi would have had any reason to know Donald Trump.

Did Trump know vince lombardi
Donald Trump has claimed to have known Vince Lombardi, but there is no public evidence to support that they ever met or had a relationship.

During a March 2026 summit in Miami, Trump stated, "Vince Lombardi was a very tough person... I knew him". However, his claims have faced significant skepticism for several reasons:

Timeline Discrepancy: Vince Lombardi died on September 3, 1970, at the age of 57. At the time of Lombardi's death, Trump was 24 years old and was just beginning his career in real estate with his father.

Factual Errors: In previous instances, analysts from the Washington Post noted that Trump had misstated fundamental facts about Lombardi's coaching style and philosophy.

Lack of Corroboration: There are no historical records, photographs, or accounts from Lombardi's family or associates that place Trump in the legendary coach's social or professional circle.

Trump frequently uses Lombardi as a rhetorical symbol for "winning" and has compared his own leadership and "eye for talent" to the Hall of Fame coach. Despite these comparisons and his recent verbal claim of personal acquaintance, the consensus among historians and fact-checkers is that they did not actually know each other.

of pampered entitlement and a belief that might means right and wealth bestows upon him righteousness in all things.
If he ever had to live a single day in the life of a regular person, without entitlement, special consideration or recognition, he would go even more insane than he presently is.

He actually got $420 million from Fred, and there's no evidence he paid back a single penny.

Also, he was given access to all of Fred's business contacts.

That does not add up to Trump's self-description as a "fabulously successful self-made billioniare."

His wife, Marie, was a Republican, and the difference in political philosophies sometimes led to loud arguments, according to their daughter, Susan.

Lombardi had supported Kennedy in Wisconsin, and had his private phone number. Paul Hornung was in the National Guard, serving on active duty in December 1961. He called the coach to tell him he couldn’t get a furlough to be able to play in the NFL championship game against the Giants. Lombardi hung up, and called JFK.

Hornung rushed for 89 yards in that game, and scored 19 total points in Green Bay’s 37-0 win.

The only thing Trump had in common with Trump was that they both attended Fordham (about 30 years apart — Lombardi was one of the Seven Blocks of Granite). Lombardi graduated; Trump transferred.
