Mark Kelly: 'Illegal orders' to make civilians suffer in Iran would be 'black mark' on military, US

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) hit back at a recent post from President Trump threatening Iranian infrastructure, saying Monday that “threatening to target power plants and other non-military targets is not strength.”

“If those words become orders to destroy civilian infrastructure with no valid military purpose, it’s hard to see how they would not violate the laws of armed conflict. America leads best with strength, discipline, and professionalism. Illegal orders to make civilians suffer would be a black mark on our military and our country,” Kelly, a retired Navy captain, added in his post on the social platform X.

Kelly’s post came in response to a Truth Social post from Trump on Sunday in which he pressed Tehran to “open the F‑‑‑in’ Strait, you crazy bastards.”

Kelly late last year became entangled in a fight with the Trump administration over a video in which he and five other Democratic lawmakers told military service members not to go along with “illegal orders.”

2. I understand your anger... but they're not robots or stupid

However, I taught GED classes at 29 Palms and Camp Pendleton to enlisted Marines. I also come from a military-serving family and have a close family member who served as a Navy Corpsman with the 1st Marine Division during Vietnam.

Although I don’t know the character of enlisted Marines today, I have known drill instructors to be upright, honest, and deeply dedicated. They do everything they can to train Marines to survive in battle—that is their number one job.

Please remember that they are young and follow their command. They’re not robots.

I think it’s fair to criticize Command Officers who put enlisted in danger , but not those who serve.

Many come from difficult backgrounds and want to improve their futures.

He definitely was not a robot.
There is is a reason they are trained to follow orders. In combat situations it could literally mean the difference between life or death.
We should not be disparaging the enlisted nor their immediate commanders.
It's the generals and petey boy that deserve our scorn and ridicule.
