NYT headline when Biden added jobs vs. NYT headline when trump adds less jobs

Some things speak for themselves. When Bien added 266,000 jobs this was the headline: Job growth slowed in April, Muddling Expectations

And today when trump added 172,000 their headline: 172,000 Jobs Added in May As U.S.
Labor Market Upswing Continues

... to institute Feudalism 2.0, and doing anything that benefits we, The Great Unwashed, is anathema to them. They commonly refer to us as their "Human Capital", because we're all just livestock to them.
Democrats need a course correction, and that means shitcanning "being nice to our colleagues across the aisle", and instead, taking the fight right to them. After what they've done to the country, they deserve no forgiveness or mercy, and they will get none. You can damn sure betcha they wouldn't give you any.
I will keep pounding this home: Trump is a traitor, and anyone who supports a traitor IS a traitor.

The problem is MAGAs screaming "fake news!" because it makes their guys look bad by comparison.
So the headline writers' solution is to take good results and make it sound bad or least so-so.

"shatter traditions" and go after interviewers for their hypocrisy.

- "I'm assuming you've asked the same question again and again to republicans given the disarray they're in, Katie."
- "I guess you must have been somewhere else when the Biden administration passed landmark legislation. Or are you picking sides?"
- "I'm not here to talk about drama -- I'm here to talk about extreme corruption while Americans can't pay for groceries."

Media folks can be cowed. Goppers do it well.

I think many Dems have a complex about "not seeming too..." whatever. They can't tout successes without saying "it's not perfect, but..." They can't take a good economic headline when we have the White House without mentioning "we still have a long way to go." They don't want to seem too tone deaf. They don't want to seem satisfied. They don't want to seem like they're proud of accomplishments (oftentimes). In the end, all that humility comes off as being less confident and when you aren't confident, people won't have much confidence in you.

This is not EVERY Democrat. But we sure need more of the bullish kind.

Perhaps we should never say "but, we have a long way to go" because the audience only wants to hear the positive. And apparently the majority of the audience doesn't mind being conned with tooth fairies and trickle-down manna.

Some of the new younger Democrats aren't afraid to be honest, and I think/hope that that will eventually get the "audiences" to expect that in the future.

Wishfully.

Job Growth Slowed in April, Muddling Expectations

The increase of 266,000 fell far short of estimates, though strong economic growth is still forecast for the months ahead.

Home Chef, a meal-kit delivery service, has been snapping up employees at a rapid pace. Despite an underwhelming April jobs report, economists still predict a labor market recovery this year. Jenna Schoenefeld for The New York Times

May 7, 2021

The American jobs machine tottered last month, confounding optimistic forecasts of the labor market’s recovery and sharpening debates over the impact of federal pandemic-related jobless benefits on the nation’s work force.

Employers added 266,000 jobs in April, the government reported Friday, far below the gains registered in March. The jobless rate rose slightly, to 6.1 percent, as the labor force grew faster than the number of jobs.

The unemployment rate rose for the first time since April 2020.

4. Many people read only headlines
Fri Jun 5, 2026, 02:41 PM
Friday

When I was a student journalist in college writing headlines for the college paper they had to be signed off on by a colleague and an editor. They received just as much scrutiny as the article itself. The purpose of the headline is to summarize the article as a whole. If a headline editorializes and then that is corrected in the article, the headline is not accurate.

Does that mean we can't comment on anything he says? Obviously, as long as the NYT is publishing news stories, they are practicing journalism and are fair game for criticism from people who care about the practice. Declining subscriptions do not absolve them.

In April 2021, yes, Biden had added 266,000 jobs -- and it was lower than what many economists had predicted.

Today, Trump did indeed add 172,000 jobs, but it was actually somewhat better than economists had predicted.

Whatever one might say about the NY Times, I don''t really think they can be accused of putting a thumb on the scales for Trump when you take their reporting and editorializing as a whole.
