I am pissed at platner, but we need the senate

(7,459 posts)When you have to threaten democratic voters and call them names you are getting kind of , well, Trumpian.
Trump threatens us and calls us names because he hates democracy and wants to crush us while stealing everything we have.
I think you are just angry because you see a plan for victory possibly slipping away.
If you want to influence democrats I think it best to just make your case without the attacks and insults

(11,202 posts)I'm fairly chill about the Platner stuff (and frankly tired of it dominating discussion forever and ever of late).
But, no. No one - anywhere - should be telling voters a candidate or politician owes them nothing.
Politics is not a fandom. Platner is not Chappelle Roan.
Politicians earn votes. He will either persuade people or he will not.
Platner's probably going to win Tuesday. And that's fine. If/When he does, then let's get Collins out of there.
But foul-mouthed diatribes from what looks like a half-unhoused alcoholic is not it. Nice applause video for people on social media, but for the love of god, never show this to actual Maine voters. There are probably people either on the fence, unconvinced, or uncomfortable with voting for Platner who can be nudged into ultimately doing it in the general.
You don't manage that via this mess.
"This politician owes you nothing" is the absolute antithesis of both Democratic and democratic thinking. Terrible. Not just terrible, stupid. This man is stupid. I do not want this man in contact with voters. Ever.
Quiet Em
(3,149 posts)Really stupid message. I don't think this message does the Platner campaign any good.
Sympthsical
(11,202 posts)I would be sorely tempted to vote against Platner in the primary out of pure spite. A politician owes voters nothing? Well, bub in the unabomber cabin, voters owe politicians even less.
His "fans" have not been doing him any favors in the past week. I haven't loved how any of this is going down at this late stage. But now the pendulum is swinging in the other direction, where it's like, "Ok, but I don't want to be associated with these people either . . ."
Who's that third guy? Can we still go with that third guy?
That's what's been kind of a little funny about this. Mills is a non-entity in this race. Lacks all charisma and energy. There's a third option standing right there, and absolutely no one has tried to promote him in any meaningful way.
It feels like the two sides are getting addicted to the moderate vs. progressive slapfight as proxy for the party at large. Which I get. But they're all being weird about it now.
Quiet Em
(3,149 posts)Very well said.
mr715
(4,546 posts)The third guy is a progressive and that bumps against Platner who has more press, more money, and has actually done the foot work.
Maine voters, based on the polls, like what Platner is selling.
There simply is no niche for Costello to occupy.

(151,825 posts)Is a woman. Using "female" as a noun is a misogynistic habit. Women vote. They are female citizens. Female is a adjective, not a noun, when speaking of human beings.

And yes, by all means, lets debate correct use of word female rather than certain candidate's issues.

(1,247 posts)terms "feminist Democrat" and "female Fortune 500 CEOs" are intended to be denigrating, are they not (rhetorical)?
3.) Your claim to know not only what "non-college educated whites" think but also that they think it "justifiably" is quite the patting-of-one's-self-on-the back-type clairvoyance.
4.) That you apparently believe your example of what Democrats "care more about" AND that such an example is...justifiable, IS PATENTLY ABSURD BORDERING ON BIZARRE.
How DARE you posit that Democrats have not historically been on the side of and have since 1935 been trying to pass legislation to help the "non-college educated," the downtrodden, the working poor, the hungry, the infirm, the elderly, the homeless (Kamala had a well-considered housing plan): Social Security; Medicare; Medicaid; SNAP; Workmen's Comp; Unemployment Benefits; Minimum Wage; Child Labor Laws; OSHA; the ACA; the now-defunct Biden Capping of Insulin Costs; and more.

(7,045 posts)A race to the bottom. While we have always had flawed politicians, it seems to me that more of these fuckers are running for office and in some cases, winning elections. Our tolerance has grown for these flawed fuckers and we are willing to support them if we think they will win. I don't know if we will be able to change this sorry course we're on.
How low can we go?

and then there is Bernie Sanders when asked if he was given assurances that nothing else would drop

meanwhile AOC does not want to wade into this at all
I really just wanted to stay out of this Platner fight until the primary votes were counted and the result was definitive, but this podcast guy being brought into the forum discussion, whose message is politically stupid, unhelpful and is being used to create unneccessary division is not something I will ignore.
Platner is the very likely Democratic nominee for Maine Senate. We need a high turnout and every vote we can get to win this seat in the general election. Maine Democrats are not going to vote for Susan Collins. Why piss any of them off on purpose?

(321,113 posts)What Ro Kanna had to say about it, too.
When the Democrats in Maine have their candidate, we will all get behind the winner.

(3,149 posts)thankfully one of the smartest things the Platner campaign has done is to ignore Fetterman.
For awhile i thought Fetterman was just warped because he spends too much time on X and Fox News and that was why he's like this. (My kindest take because I was never a fan of his.)
Now I do think he is not well.
What a mess.
