Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces the biggest test of his political power since taking office with Tuesday’s congressional primaries.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has made endorsements in three high-stakes Democratic congressional races, seeking to expand his movement’s bench. If his preferred candidates win, he will have demonstrated that the tens of thousands of people he inspired to head to the polls last year will continue to turn out for his allies.

“If some of his candidates win, or if they come close, will that mean that a lot of folks are going to be a little more afraid of him than they were before? Because it proves that whatever machine is behind him is going to be deployed throughout the city in the future,” said Basil Smikle, a professor at Columbia University and the former head of the New York State Democratic party.
