The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Edward Koubek, has been charged with second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim has been identified as Jairo Sandoval-Pliego, a pastor at San Jose Catholic Church in Austin.

The incident happened at around 10:30 p.m. on June 27 at Bob's Steak and Chop House located at 301 Lavaca Street.

Sandoval-Pliego told police that Koubek used to go to church to pray but that he had not seen Koubek for several months. He said he and Koubek had a polite conversation and that Koubek attacked him unprovoked.

Koubek told police he would go to confession occasionally and that he believed Sandoval-Pliego "would snicker" after he gave confession.

When he saw Sandoval-Pliego at dinner, Koubek said it upset him as "he is still holding a grudge" against Sandoval-Pliego.

When asked what his intention was, police say Koubek said, "in the moment, to kill him."

I mean this is classic:

But the article refers to Jairo Sandoval-Pliego as a "pastor" of a Catholic Church which is either lazy reporting/editing or the story doesn't have in its facts straight.

I graduated from a Catholic university, with one of my degrees in religion and I swear I never once remember the Benedictine monks or even priests at the Catholic Churches I visited, as anything other than "Father" or "priest".
Not complaining though. Like learning new things.

(For the record, obviously not Catholic. In fact I'm an atheist but I like learning about different religions)

I, however, think there's more to this. What did he confess that he feared the pastor was snickering at him? What was the exchange they had before the stabbing? Will Bob's Steak and Chop House move to round-ended steak knives (you know, like those safety scissors we all had in kindergarten?)?

It’s fairly likely he was with a parishioner who paid.
