UPDATE 7/1/26 @ 1:14 p.m.
VINTON COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) - Its a case officials are calling almost indescribable. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson released new information about a child neglect case in Vinton County Wednesday afternoon, along with Sheriff Ryan Cain and other investigators.
Four people were arrested and charged after investigators searched a home in the Hamden area and discovered 16 children inside Tuesday.
AG Wilson said seven of those children were taken to Columbus hospitals, and at least two of them were life-flighted. He said the children have limited communication skills, and some of them cant communicate at all. They range in ages from one and a half to 18 years old.
Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders are all facing 16 second-degree felony counts of child endangerment in the case.
Sheriff Ryan Cain described it as a disgusting scene, and mentioned that most livestock is kept in better conditions than these children were. Cain said a large number of the children were kept in a roughly 12x12 area, which he said seems to be where they spent most of the last four years.
When asked, officials said neighbors in the area had no idea there were even children inside the home.

(35,941 posts)Same difference, I guess.
That's immediately where my mind went. "Oh, my god, what has ICE done NOW?"
This is horrible either way of course, but phrases like "prolonged and extreme interfamilial neglect and abuse" add an layer extra layer of horror to the story.

(29,821 posts)Yet not surprising. Terrible in that incest rape/birth is so prevalent.

(48,267 posts)The oldest child is reportedly 18. Assuming that's her child, she had that child at 15. So yes, I am not sure if she should be considered a victim or a perp here.

(19,388 posts)Age 15 is below the age of consent anywhere in the U.S. (right? I am not a lawyer but I sure as hell hope that's true).
And depending when into her 15th year ... perhaps the rape occurred when she was 14.
Given that the article at the OP link says
Investigators said they believe the family largely avoided establishing medical and other government records during that time.
... I wonder if they were anti-government, anti-family-planning-of-any-sort types. Yikes. Those poor kids. And I do feel for the mother Elizabeth, who clearly had her childhood stolen from her and probably saw no way out of this mess.
LisaL
(48,267 posts)Not sure how that works as she was under 16 at the time. Parental permission?
RandomNumbers
(19,388 posts)I wonder if her parents knew she was pregnant?
Q.: when is rape not rape?
A.: when your parents and the judge tell you to marry the guy instead of charging him with rape.
LisaL
(48,267 posts)several months after the wedding.
However, I am not sure he would have qualified for any statutory rape charges, because he is not more than 4 years older than she is.
LisaL
(48,267 posts)For her to get legally married at 15 (in 2008), which she did, she had to get a certificate from a judge.
LisaL
(48,267 posts)The two people who apparently produced all these children got married when she was 15 and he was 19 (in West Virginia).
She was already pregnant because they married in March of 2008 and the first child was born in May of 2008.

(70,202 posts)Population about 12,000 people, 96% of whom are white. 79% of voters there chose Trump in 2024. Income, education, health status all what you would expect.
This is the shining beacon of white rural America touted by JD Vance, who grew up a few counties over.
This is what "try that in a small town" really means.

(3,490 posts)I lived in a very rural area for 20 years. Small town outside of a small town outside of Vegas. There were a lot of things I loved about it. But basically, one of the things I learned early on was the face people presented was usually very different from what reality was. Try that in a small town? Well, since my experience was that screwing your neighbor (in every sense of the word), and cooking meth were OK, not sure if Jason Aldean had any idea of what small towns are capable of tolerating.

(21,166 posts)You have to get a license to drive.
You have to get a license to open a restaurant.
But people can produce as many children as the like without any questions asked.
There oughta be a law.

that parenthood should require a license. The simple ability to juxtapose genitalia is a woefully inadequate qualification.
I became an NP way back in 1976, and have now been retired for 5 years. Stories like this reinforce my long-held opinion.
SergeStorms
(21,166 posts)I've been retired for 28 years (some very special circumstances on that) but I've been as happy as can be (considering the present calamity in the White House) all those years. Good on 'ya, and thanks for being a nurse all those years. It takes a special kind of person to do what you did.

LisaL
(48,267 posts)because of their age difference. He is listed at 36 and she is listed at 33, so he is 3 years older than she is. So even being under 16, because he is only 3 years older, would not qualify as a statutory rape.
Obviously, whatever West Virginia thinks of it, it's still a really bad situation for a 15 year old to be in. And never mind the two of them kept producing a kid after kid, and apparently barely took care of all those children.
RandomNumbers
(19,388 posts)but I will still call it rape. She was underage and unable to consent. Period. (I get it when it is a few weeks or a couple months and it's basically a technicality ... but 3 years? He should at least get a reduced charge of some sort. Sigh. If only I got to make the laws ...)
And phenomenally poor parenting on the part of his parents - the grandparents in this case (what happened to her parents, I wonder) - for not getting something going in the way of birth control.
