Michigan lawmakers weigh safety measures after Temple Israel attack
Lansing Michigan lawmakers are considering this week requests for $23 million in funding for safety measures aimed at protecting Jewish residents after an attack on an Oakland County synagogue in March.
The spending could be part of the annual state budget that's being crafted in the Legislature. Votes on the final spending plan are possible Wednesday night or Thursday night.
Two Jewish lawmakers, Sen. Jeremy Moss, D-Bloomfield Township, and Rep. Samantha Steckloff, D-Farmington Hills, have championed the asks for security funding on behalf of the Jewish Federation of Detroit. Their requests are two of hundreds from legislators seeking billions of dollars in support for projects across the state.
The March 12 attack on Temple Israel, which involved a gunman ramming his vehicle into the synagogue's front doors, showed what worked in protecting people and what needed improvement, Moss said in an interview Wednesday.
