A Parade of Tall Ships Is Heading to New York. Here's What to Know.

The Hudson River will be filled with dozens of tall ships from
at least 20 nations this Fourth of July for Sail4th 250.

George Washington once referred to the Hudson River as “the key of America,” as his Revolutionary War troops battled the formidable British Navy in its waters.

The navy’s massive sailing ships were an integral part of Britain’s efforts to fight against the American Revolution, but proved no match for the mettle of the Revolutionaries — and General Washington’s strategic acumen.

This weekend, that same river will once more be filled with tall ships, this time celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence. The tall ships parade, part of the Sail4th 250 event, is one of a number of celebrations commemorating the birth of the country this weekend.

What kind of ships will be there?

More than 40 ships representing at least 20 nations are set to participate in the parade. So many ships are expected that the city built a floating dock to accommodate all the additional ships inhabiting its waters this week. Many of the ships flocking to New York are mainstays in tall ship events around the world.

This is something for your kids, grandkids, and all those who are young-at-heart! They'll remember the Tall Ships parade for the rest of their lives.

During the 1976 Bicentennial celebration I took my 6-year-old son to the Boston Harbor for the Tall Ships, and it was an amazing experience. My son has always loved sailing and he now owns a sailboat. He and his wife have their boat out today on the Long Island Sound, and they will take it to the East River to see the Tall Ships.

1. For anyone in the NY area, this will be a fun thing to see

In 1976, when tall ships came to Manhattan, it was a wonderful sight.

From the article, NYC built a temporary dock to accommodate the extra ships. Imagine, unlike Trump, they actually planned what was needed.

3. I remember watching the 1976 parade with great enthusiasm.

A coworker brought a small black and white tv and we watched between tours at the historical site where we worked. We were joyful and excited, unlike with the current observance. He steals joy from everything.

18. My partner Dusty was a 16 yo working a concession. His family filmed from a decent vantage point.

Dusty died in 2011. I need to find out who ended up with the the footage. It was a treat!

The aerial shots are really cool! The tall ships look so much nicer when the sails are up and full wind is in the sails. I always thought the still photos of the ships at anchor didn't do them justice.

7. I'd love to see them. Just to see the ships.

There's not one damn thing to celebrate this year.

But I do love sailing ships. When we're in Boston and have the time, we take a trip to Constitution. She's gorgeous.

We saw the tall ships and the USS Constitution sail in Boston during the 2012 anniversary of the war of 1812. I'll never forget it.

9. I saw a couple of the Class B vessels today

I went out to a waterfront park on Long Island Sound this morning and noticed them.

There is an app /guide called AquaMap where you can trace the vessels as they set forth toward their staging points in NY Harbor.

I was 20 for the 1976 Bicentennial celebration when I first saw the Class A vessels.

I was aboard one of the Class B vessels for the 1986 Statue of Liberty celebrations.

I've been a big fan for the restoration and maintenance of these gaff-rigged vessels ever since.

11. I vacationed in Nova Scotia in the year 2000...

specifically to see the tall ships in Halifax celebrating the millenium. It was incredible and while walking the pier to see the boats up close I couldn't help but notice how being in a crowd of mostly Canadians was so much different than the behavior of Americans at crowded events. Everyone was just chilled out and relaxed and no fights breaking out or shoving, just strolling along enjoying the day. I then went on to see more of Nova Scotia such as Peggy's Cove and Cape Breton National Seashore. I have been many places in the US on vacations and I still remember this trip as being the most breathtaking scenery I've ever seen.

I, my sis, dad, and a bunch of cousins, aunts & uncles walked down to under the GW Bridge Manhattan side by the Little Red Lighthouse.

We saw all these cool, Tall Ships!
Different built details, and some different sails. They sailed a bit north of the bridge, then turned around and went back down.
It was *Wonderful*!
