Until we have a democratic majority in Congress, will they resurrect HUAC and have hearings? Will anyone who is not 100% for Trump be suspected of communism and summoned for interrogations? If you sent a donation to the ACLU or NAACP, will be deemed a communist until you can prove otherwise? Or a provocative poster (excuse the alliteration) on DU?
My uncle joined the Communist Party in college in the early Thirties and was in a student "cell". Because it was one of the few organizations that wanted change from the system that gave us the Wall Street Crash and the Depression and advocated against Jim Crow.
Because of that temporary membership, during the McCarthy Era, he was investigated. The FBI came to his home and questioned him outside for an hour. My father moved away from his own brother, b/c during that era, anyone associated with someone deemed a communist (past and/or present) was also suspect. They never truly trusted each other after that.
I have a copy of Red Channels: The Report of Communist Influence in Radio and Television. Actors, artists, people in the film and theater industries were listed. Philip Loeb, an actor and liberal union leader in the theater was reluctantly let go from his role as Jake Goldberg by Molly Berg. He later committed suicide and the next day, the FBI closed his file, finding nothing to take forward.
While my supposition may be baseless, I also respect it's been done before and could happen again.
