The colors of the American flag represent core national values: Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, White stands for purity and innocence, and Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
While the official 1777 Flag Act did not assign meaning to the colors, Charles Thomson—secretary of the Continental Congress—established this symbolism in 1782 when designing the Great Seal of the United States.
