Americas 250th: July Fourth events unfold amid dangerous heat wave

The hottest seats in Washington? About 160 degrees
With the gates set to open in 45 minutes, dangerous heat is bearing down on the National Mall as thousands prepare to attend the "Salute to America 250" celebration.
A temperature reading taken from the thousands of chairs arranged for the attendees registered about 160 degrees, showing just how hot surfaces have become underneath the afternoon sun.
Cooling stations, water distribution points and misting tents have been set up around Washington Monument grounds, which are scheduled to open to the public at 5 p.m. ET.
The conditions are a stark contrast to the nation's bicentennial celebration in Washington in 1976, when the high temperature reached 84 degrees and the low dipped to 65 degrees, according to Department of Commerce data.
