Not to DU but to my 2004 F-150 pick up.
325,000 work miles, the frame is rusting out, the tail gate is gone, the hood is looking bad,
the A.C. is shot, lots of wings and dings, the bed is sinking away from the cab, the spare
tire is almost impossible to remove, and all 4 areas around the tires are rusted out covered
with aftermarket products, and the alternator just went out. Looking @ $$$ which I cant
justify.
The engine, transmission, and horn are still good.
A lot of nice plants have come from that truck.

With your old truck in such diabolical condition, you would do very well to look at multiple city newspapers within a 5 hour or so drive to find another one of more recent vintage gently ysed by an urban cowboy to go grocery shopping and maybe tow a small boat once a year on his/her vacation.
My last P/U had blown through both voting age and drinking age when I inherited the $$ to replace it.

(189 posts)I really thought it would be my last vehicle, but it wasn't
Now I have an little escort, and a 10 ft utility trailer. Better gas mileage, and on the brink of too much of a combination for it's little 4 banger
And the thing I hate most is it's got NANNY electronics, I get dozens of warnings a day. Stupid shit like be careful driving, and look in the back seat (I have no children and don't put perishables in the back seat, I actually have the seat folded down to accept 6 ft long objects. And it reminds me that in Wisconsin winters, there is a chance of ice. And the damned software can't be turned off, so I get messages to replace the oil when it still has 30% of its working life left. I HATE the NANNY shit. I'm old. You don't get old with a minimum of vehicles in your past by being reckless and abusive to your vehicle.

(2,173 posts)I had one from about that same year with a 4.2 litre engine -- which was pretty small for a pickup that size but it got good mileage⛽
It was a stick shift too which was unusual but rust caught up with my F-150 too.

(38,963 posts)I think she has rusty frame issues, as well. I mentioned the water to her last week - but I think she didn't understand how much water I was talking about and thought someone spilled something. She had to dive in the water last night and seemed shocked at how much there was.

(30,793 posts)Except for the AC/heater. Only one rear door opens. The paint job is rough from sitting in the sun all the time, but no rust. I drove it from Cincinnati to Calif, and Calif back to Kentucky (with a wreck in Albuquerque.) It makes a dandy farm truck now, hauling firewood, compost, and sometimes, hay.
Many good memories with it, a few very bad ones.

(5,185 posts)... is the best truck I've ever owned. She's got more than a 1/4 million miles on her, though not quite as many as yours! I'm coming to the same conclusion, that her time has come. But finances are tight now, so I've got to find a way to squeeze that last bit of life out of her by patching her up enough to pass one more inspection. Hell, I'm staring down the barrel of 80, and I thought this might be my last rig, but Vermont winters aren't kind to vehicles, so... kay sera sera. Or however that phrase is spelled.

Sorry you had to say goodbye to an old friend.
I'm still driving my little red manual 2000 Honda Accord. I love that little lady. Just had the clutch replaced... Some other things. But she and I got 26 years on her original clutch lol. Don't know if that's a record? I'm an easy daily driver, she still has only about 160,000 on.
But, she spent most her life in Oregon, 5 years in Illinois, 2 years down in FL Keys
No rust. Whew!
Hope you go with another F150. I loved mine. Had one to haul my sons sport gear and teammates. Canopy required. Man, good ventilation and a/c, because those kids really stank it up!

The Texan brags, I can get in my truck, drive all day, and never cross the boundary of my ranch!
The Missouri farmer replies, Yep
I had a truck like that once, too.
