Speaker Johnson says House will pass Trump's voter ID bill through arduous process after GOP revolt

Speaker Johnson says House will pass Trump’s voter ID bill through arduous process after GOP revolt

Johnson pointed out that the House has passed a version of the voter ID bill multiple times, adding, “We’re going to try one more time on a budget reconciliation bill, and I think that will be the way to get it through the Senate, and finally to the president’s desk.”

House GOP leaders believe that using a budget framework, which would only require a simple majority of votes, to pass the SAVE America Act with only Republicans in both chambers of Congress is the best path forward. They have successfully used this method twice during Trump’s second term – to advance a major domestic agenda law and to fund immigration enforcement.

However, many Senate Republicans are skeptical that they could muscle the legislation through under their strict rules around the budget reconciliation process.

During the last reconciliation push earlier this year, Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that Trump’s expansive voter ID bill did not comply with the chamber’s rules dictating which legislation is eligible to be in a budget framework.

I guess toadying is easier than representing. You only have to listen to one person when toadying.

through the Senate so now Moses Mike has to twist into a pretzel to get it back to the Senate. I’m sure there’s mutual professional respect but Senators are looking at House members like 🙄

The Republican Senators have seen all the analysis from every side that says the SAVE Act will be more disadvantageous to THEIR voters, short and long term, than to Democrats. Getting to 60 was impossible but with two loose primaried GOP senators it’s even more unpossible.

going to be 18 before the next election made sure he got a passport, so he can vote.

Then, he looked at me and said "But, as a white male, they'd never try to stop me from voting".....then he told me what he thinks of that.

It wasn't very polite....that's my boy!

Especially if your name has ever changed. Kinda keeps people stuck in a house huh? But voting not be your big concern.

The move to our house 7 years ago was the 18th move I’d made.

How could they practically enforce this a few months before an election?

This is just about pleasing Trump and introducing more chaos (thanks SCOTUS) into the elections.

Again this is all happening too late. It's July. Even if everything worked out smoothly in Congress, I can't see this heading to Trump's desk for a while until next month in the best case scenario. Then there will be lawsuits. Even if SCOTUS wants to intervene, it will be too late because there's no way states can change their voting process a month before the election or while early voting has already started.
