Can Abdul El-Sayed win a general election in Michigan? I fear rural people in Michigan will never vote for a guy named
Abdul.
Thoughts?

(2,225 posts)But Obama wasnt running as a democratic socialist.
El Sayed can win, but hell need to not only run up his numbers in Wayne County (I think hell improve on Harris in some of the suburbs), but keep Rogers margins down in the rural areas. That part is hard to say.
His main focus should be to follow the Mamdani playbook and focus less on foreign policy and more on inflation/cost of living/affordability. He may be disciplined enough in his messaging, but I have no idea about some of his supporters who may want to make this about Israel. If hes made to look like some sort of Hamas supporter, he wont win.
Trumps popularity in the state has nosedived.l and besides he barely won it. Likewise, Rogers barely lost it. Rogers is perceived as a moderate so hell need to be tied to Trump and his polices.

(8,450 posts)Of course Abdul El-Sayed needs to win the primary first. Do you really think I was unaware of that?
Keep nitpicking DU posts if you enjoy it so much!

Spent the day at hospital getting some tests done. People were talking about their 4th holiday
most said it was a quiet day
not like other 4ths. They remarked it just wasnt fun this year.

(6,994 posts)I thought she was a candidate who appeals to a wide range of people. She is smart and articulate. She is courageous and genuine.
The one thing I heard was she was at a disadvantage because Schumer endorsed Haley Stevens. I don't find Haley Stevens anywhere near as appealing as Mallory McMorrow. Stevens seems kind of cookie cutter to me.
I haven't found anything that bothers me about El-Sayed. But I think your question is worth asking. He might win a primary, but can he win in the general?
I'm not a Michigander, but the results of these elections have an effect on all of us.

(3,552 posts)Im guessing McMorrows fundraising took a dive when Stevens and El-Sayed both grabbed important endorsements.
On edit: this was meant as a reply to yellow dahlias question about why McMorrow may have dropped out.

(40,509 posts)For context, in 2000, Trump got about as many votes in the metro Detroit region as he did in the upper 2/3rds of the state. About 75% of his vote came from counties classified as urban or mostly urban.
