FYAI: AI - Threat or Menace????

Last edited Mon Jul 6, 2026, 11:07 PM - Edit history (1)

For Your Artificial Information. Attended an interesting lecture today: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love AI

William Regli is a national leader in artificial intelligence, science policy and defense innovation. He is currently a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, where his research focuses on AI validation, intelligent systems, and digital manufacturing. He recently [under Biden] served in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as Senior Advisor for AI Risk, where he supported the National AI Initiatives Office in advancing responsible AI development and deployment across the federal government.

This UTube is substantially the same lecture I attended; there are a few other UTubes out there also. There is a Elon Musk antidote at about 55 - 54 minutes in. (Slightly amusing. His retelling during the lecture I attended was a bit more slightly amusing)

... regarding googletube. Before posting I looked around for a good summary, report or paper to link in. I found this:

https://www.potomacinstitute.org/steps/images/PDF/Articles/25/STEPS%2011%20Regli.pdf

It's a summary, but it is very perfunctory and academic, and, I think, assumes a knowledge of some of the technical vocabulary.

In the lecture he does a lot more explaining of the basic concepts and gives historical examples that help to illuminate his points. It actually is a good lecture, and even entertaining, and he also answers questions at the end (as he did at the lecture I attended). The audience is very sharp and knowledgeable, so that is a good aspect of the lecture format.

So, despite the ill-repute that is attached to the googletube, I went ahead and posted it anyway.
