Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDoes anyone have proof that the McConnell photo and message are real?
His their skin sure looks smooth, which is often a tell that it's AI.
The photo just came from his office which is obviously not trustworthy.
Also, if a fall at home was the problem, why hide it from the public?
When it happened before it was news right away.
I'm deeply suspicious even though reliable news sources post the info.

(26,928 posts)This might be the most Ai generated slop photo ever by the time we find out if he's dead or not.

(355 posts)Unless there is evidence its NOT real, then the logical thing to do is assume it is.
People have been trying to AI vet that photo to no avail.
If new evidence comes around that shows otherwise then we can start howling about it.
But right now, this shit makes us all look very silly.

(355 posts)There are image analyzers out there that can detect the likelihood of photoshopping and/or the use of AI. Posters in this very forum have been running that picture through all of them and the results seem to suggest its authentic.
If and when evidence emerges that they somehow tricked all the analyzers and something is amiss, THEN I'll buy it. The onus isn't on me to prove its real, the onus is on those who think otherwise to prove that it isn't. So far, no one has.
I'm an evidence based, logical thinker. I won't yell conspiracy until there is evidence. There is absolutely NONE right now.
Blues Heron
(9,240 posts)look at his finger on the newspaper, there is an obvious light ring where it was photoshopped in. Have you ever used photoshop?

(355 posts)My story is very cool. Its also 100% true. I've been involved in every aspect of web applications development, from design to photo editing to coding at all tiers of application architecture, database design, etc.
Show proof it was photoshopped. Use an authoritative source. Until you do, you have nothing to support your stance.
Blues Heron
(9,240 posts)again, check out around the fingertip where its "touching" the paper, its unnaturally lighter around the finger like a halo. To me that looks like a photoshop artifact. ymmv

"Show me the evidence, and going through this pixel by pixel, I just don't see the evidence that makes me think that," he said. "If you showed me that evidence, I can certainly be open to the idea that it's not true."
He was careful to add that authenticity can't be proven with total certainty by anyone who wasn't present when the photo was taken but said "there's just nothing about the image to me that is suspect."

(2,118 posts)The nasty responses are uncalled for. A polite response explaining why its unlikely the image is AI is far more likely to be helpful.
I agree that the photo seems digitally altered, but that is likely and editing software like photoshop altering the original photo to make skin look softer and less palesomething like that. People do that all the time to make photos more flattering.
All of that being said I do find it suspicious that Mitch McConnell isnt posting a video or, at a minimum, giving some sort of audio of him speaking about his condition.
Obviously I have zero proof that his condition is much worse than his staff is reporting, but were all entitled to voice our reasons for being skeptical without being snarked at and called names.
MorbidButterflyTat
(5,111 posts)Apparently some people think the only way to alter an image is with AI, when there have been image altering capabilities for decades or longer.
"It's not AI!" Is not proof the image is real.
I agree with you, I don't understand why Mitch can't give a statement in person. Nothing from him for weeks then suddenly right after his buddy passes away he provides a feeble explanation and "proof of life" but not a word about Graham?
This whole thing stinks and it seems to me it would be easy enough to PROVE his health status.
BlueKota
(5,627 posts)My sister pointed out how in photos of Mitch before he was hospitalized, his face was full of deep wrinkles. In this "new," picture his face looks wrinkle free, so unless he had plastic surgery during his time in the hospital it's her opinion the photo could be a manipulated one.

(2,118 posts)But it does seem that if someone was 84 and had just spent a month indoors in a hospital bed theyd look pretty wan and pale.versus a sort of healthy glow that McConnell has in the photo. But editing a photo to make someone look healthier isnt necessarily deceptive, but is he cognitively fit? Can he speak? It seems pretty strange that McConnell isnt at least calling in to Fox News or something to give a proof of life considering all the conjecture.
I guess well find out soon enough, cant hide things forever.
crimycarny
(2,118 posts)I mean, I do that sometimes to my own photos if I have to post them publicly (pictures of me). Now at 66 not exactly a spring chicken. But, thankfully, I rarely have to so that. Just thought of it as recently my work wanted everyone to update their work profile photo.
There is no way after a man of Mitch McConnells age would have that sort of healthy glow after month inside a hospital room. No sun, just lying down. Heck, at ANY age no one looks anything but wan and paler than usual.
NJCher
(43,920 posts)There is a way you can smooth out the wrinkles. Actually there are a couple ways:
One is a circular white light focused on the person when taking the photo or doing a video. A lot of people purchase these lights for themselves if they are doing this type of work.
Second, there is a way to adjust your image when you are doing Zoom meetings. You just go in on your personal adjustments and you'll see the particular function (I can't recall the name, but I have a Zoom meeting Wed., so I'll be checking to see if it's still on). It is amazing how this adjustment takes out all the wrinkles, just like you see on both his face and his wife's.
Re the first method, assuming it's real, they certainly went to a lot of trouble to make Mitch look younger. That in itself is suspicious to me.
Look at yourself on your iPhone with the camera reversed. It can be a pretty ghastly experience. Yet it you wanted to, you could take out all those shadows and look 20 years younger.

(35,276 posts)The guy has polio and literally freezes. He has literally frozen in public numerous times. One time was when he was giving he a speech. He got totally paralyzed.
His nervous system goes into overdrive or something.
One time, my back locked up and I could not get out of bed. After 12 hours of total frustration, my husband came home, found me and called EMS.
Is it known for a fact, that he was given CPR? Is is proven. Images show him being carried out without heart monitor equipment. At that point everyone said, "He's dead because they stopped CPR".

(24,775 posts)If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and to judge. And with such a people you can then do what you please. Hannah Arendt

Fiendish Thingy
(24,775 posts)Arendt was making the point that, due to repeated lying by the government, media, and now social media, if people get to the point that they dont believe anything, they lose the capacity for critical thinking, and then the government can do whatever it wants with them.
This applies to blind MAGA cultists, but it also applies to those who believe the 2024 election was stolen, the assassination attempts were staged, and that, despite verification from numerous sources, that the photo of Mitch and his wife was an AI fake.

(11,495 posts)to call a special election to fill McConnell's senate seat if he is dead (or voluntarily leaves office, which we all know is not going to happen). I wouldn't put it past Mitch and his office to cover up his death or inability to perform his duties just to screw the country one final time.
Or maybe Donnie made a surprise visit to the hospital and laid hands on him, raising Mitch from the dead.

(11,069 posts)Right now, Republicans have only 52 votes in the Senate. It's 99%+ certain that a Republican would win a special election giving them their 53rd vote back immediately following that election. With No special election, Republicans don't get that vote back until January.
Democrats should be hoping there is no special election. McConnell remaining in the Senate but unable to vote is a huge advantage to Democrats.
