Trump revokes legal status of 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans

Donald Trumps administration will revoke the temporary legal status of 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans in the United States, according to a Federal Register notice on Friday, in the latest expansion of his crackdown on immigration. It will be effective 24 April.
The move cuts short a two-year parole granted to the immigrants under former president Joe Biden that allowed them to enter the country by air if they had US sponsors.
Trump, a Republican, took steps to ramp up immigration enforcement after taking office, including a push to deport record numbers of immigrants in the US illegally. He has argued that the legal entry parole programs launched under his Democratic predecessor overstepped the boundaries of federal law and called for their termination in a 20 January executive order.
Trump said on 6 March that he would decide very soon whether to strip the parole status from some 240,000 Ukrainians who fled to the US during the conflict with Russia. Trumps remarks came in response to a Reuters report that said his administration planned to revoke the status for Ukrainians as soon as April.

(37,242 posts)... were illegal because they came in as refugees on their own boats. Our Coast Guard were patrolling the waters for "boat people" and rescued them.
They kept coming in for years through the late 50's and early 60's. Somehow they were allowed to stay and most of them eventually earned citizenship status. Those Cuban-Americans have kept together all these years in South Florida, waiting for a chance to return to Cuba, I guess. What's shocking is that they believed Chump would ever lift a finger to help them.

(9,419 posts)I was told that America has a wet Feet dry feet policy with the Cubans. My understanding is that wet Feet dry feet translates to, if a cuban can touch American soil they can stay in America. However, if they are captured on they water they are returned to Cuba.

There were a bunch of articles back then too about his father's family and his father Fred, and some go back decades (to the early '80s, notably the NYT long form exposes, since 45 is a NYer)!

(600 posts)The first generation of Cubans who came (as "exiles", rather than refugees), in the 1960s, were intent on retaking the island of Cuba and many of them acquired serious armament for that purpose - not just assault rifles but even artillery. That stuff doesn't melt away. It's still in grandpa's attic. The rising generation of Cubans were less inclined to combat, but protecting their countrymen from Orange Hitler might be sufficient provocation to use grandpa's weaponry against US immigration officers.

Hopefully they will learn a lesson this time.
