Intellectually disabled teen shot by Idaho police dies after being removed from life support

Source: Associated Press

An autistic, nonverbal teenage boy who was shot repeatedly by Idaho police from the other side of a chain link fence while he was holding a knife died Saturday after being removed from life support, his family said.

Victor Perez, 17, who also had cerebral palsy, had been in a coma since the April 5 shooting, and tests Friday showed that he had no brain activity, his aunt, Ana Vazquez, told The Associated Press. He had undergone several surgeries, with doctors removing nine bullets and amputating his leg.

Officers opened fire within about 12 seconds of getting out of their patrol cars and made no apparent effort to de-escalate the situation.

The officers, whose names have not been released, were placed on administrative leave.

Since 911 we have been told all these law officers are heroes whose actions, no matter how reckless and violent, are in our collective best interests. The killing of innocent people by overreacting cops is just a price we all have to pay.

Only when cops faced the January 6 crowds were we supposed to question their use of force, but just watch how quickly Trump and company spring to the defense of every cop who shoots first and asks questions later now that the he has unleashed the beast on the rest of us.

I failed a psych test at a rather notorious police department because I didn't fit the profile they wanted for "high impact policing." They told me I'd be a better fit for a small town force or a university police department.

I have an autistic son who has had melt down and we’ve had to call police not one gun was shown and he immediately backed down seeing the cops.

I think because this kid was Hispanic is why those racist cops shot him. And what cowards there was a fence between Victor and the cops. They wouldn’t even try to talk with him. And I would not be shocked if the orange Hitler invited them to the White House and gives them medals.

I failed. According to the rejection letter, I was "not psychologically suited to be a police officer". Cracked me up. And over 50 years ago, they were not quite the violent, militaristic thugs we see far too often today.

There are rational alternative approaches to public safety.

Just return the police to their original jobs... protecting the business sector.

Form another agency to assist and help the public. Form yet another one to address violent acts.

Each should be on patrol in their areas. Except the ones who deal with violence. They are on standby in case they are needed.

And, here is the kicker. Fund each department as they rank on need. If the 'community ambassadors' get the most calls, they get the most funding. Not funding by department demand, funding by pubic demand.

Also, any and all seizures are held by the state and used where they are needed, not by the department that made the seizure.

Watch how fast things change once their bloated, sacred budgets, current societal position as a defacto monopoly, and their seizures are threatened.

Thanks for that.

Businesses can hire their own private security. No reason for the public to subsidize that.

Better to have an outside agency handling such a thing. One that can be held accountable for its actions.

There was a humorless irony in the ludicrous panic of the man screaming for help to the police while policemen were all around him. Yossarian smiled wryly at the futile and ridiculous cry for aid, then saw with a start that the words were ambiguous, realized with alarm that they were not, perhaps, intended as a call for police but as a heroic warning from the grave by a doomed friend to everyone who was not a policeman with a club and a gun and a mob of other policemen with clubs and guns to back him up. 'Help! Police!' the man had cried, and he could have been shouting of danger.
