Rubio reiterates Trump's view that Canada 'would be better off' as a US state

As Canadians prepare to vote for prime minister in an election where President Donald Trump looms large, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the president's desire to make Canada a U.S. state.
"They'll have their elections this week," Rubio said about Canada on NBC's "Meet the Press". "They're going to have a new leader, and we'll deal with a new leadership of Canada. There are many things we work with cooperatively on Canada on, but we actually don't like the way they treated us when it comes to trade."
Pressed by "Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker whether Trump still wants to make Canada part of the United States, Rubio responded: "I think the president has stated repeatedly he thinks Canada would be better off as a state. I mean, he has said that based on what he was told by the previous prime minister, who said Canada can't survive unless it treats the U.S. unfairly in trade."
Trump began pressuring Canada on trade issues before taking office and repeatedly said the country should become a new U.S. state. He recently told Time magazine that he's serious about Canada becoming part of the United States. "I'm really not trolling," Trump told Time. "Canada is an interesting case." He complained about the U.S. trade deficit with Canada and said the United States doesnt need Canadian products. "And I say the only way this thing really works is for Canada to become a state," he added.

(6,561 posts)I believe Democrats should ignore this bluster.
First, it will NEVER happen. Secondly, if it does, Canada should state we accept on the condition that every province becomes a state. The state of Quebec. The state of Ontario. The state of British Columbia. Even Nunavut, NW Territories, and Yukon should become states immediately.
That would give us 13 more states, each one solidly behind gun control, the right to choose, universal health care, and all the things we as Democrats want and support.
That's 26 new senators at at least 45 representatives apportioned out to the new "states." Expect those to come from the lowest EV states first, all those with between 4-6 EVs will drop to 3 immediately. That means the GOP will lose 18 Reps immediately since 9 out of the 15 states will 4-6 EVs are Republican states.
When that happens, the Senate will have 26 new Senators. Assuming that Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta continue to be Republican and Quebec, and the Canadian territories go purple as they usually do in Canada, assuming 16 new Democratic senators would not be far-fetched. Taking the current make up of the Senate adding this, it would be 63 - 63.
The House would be different as there should be a huge increase in Democrats, so assuming 75% of the Canadian delegation being Democrats isn't farfetched. If they keep the 435 number, assuming re-apportionment trends, that means the Republicans will lose big time. We could literally see a House where the Democrat hold an unbreakable majority to an almost super majority. Democrats holding 60% of the 435 (meaning at least 260 seats) permanently would be possible.
Then there's the SCOTUS. We would need at least four more circuits.
Finally, the EV. If this happens, there would be no path to the WH for the Republicans. Even with TX and FL, most states with over 20 EVS (including PA and IL) are blue.
One last thing. . .this also doesn't take into consideration the mentality that the Canadians will blame the Republican Party for losing their country. Even the most conservative Canadian will vote against the Republicans en masse, just like black people voted FOR the Republican Party as a voting block until 1964 due to the thinking that the Republicans ended slavery.
With all this, I'd say "do it Donald. You don't see the political consequences internally.
Even if Canada becomes just one state, that's two more Democrats and at least 45 new Congress critters in the House taken mostly from red states.
Good luck with that.

He complained about the U.S. trade deficit with Canada and said the United States doesnt need Canadian products.
Trump claims the US doesnt need Canadian products (but buys a lot of them). So if the US is that unhappy with Canada's treatment of them in trade, why not buy the products from another country or make them in the US instead?
If Canada truly can't survive unless it treats the US unfairly then don't buy from them and Canada will have mend its ways or not survive.
Consumers can conclude if they don't like shopping at Amazon, they can buy elsewhere like Walmart. Where is it in the USMCA that the US can't do that?
A very simple fix to the US-Canada trade deficit is to buy from another country - US-Canada trade deficit solved. Canada doesn't get to tell the US what to buy and from where.
Trump overhauled NAFTA with USMCA which went into force in Jan 2020
https://ustr.gov/trade-agreements/free-trade-agreements/united-states-mexico-canada-agreement
Chapter 31 of the agreement deals with various methods for dispute resolution.
Chapter 10 also covers Disputes.
So why isn't Trump using the dispute resolution he helped devise to address the unfairness he claims?

It's literally a scripted "reality show" universe that doesn't exist.
Someone "wrote it up" and their RW media, along with the rest of the stupid M$M, just regurgitates it. When it's repeated enough times, the dumbed-down masses "believe it" and now they have transformed the situation into something where the future "ends" are created, which can be had by carrying out some ludicrous, fascist style "means".

because Canada definitely won't become a state? In either case, my post pointed out that the idea of Canada becoming a state is absurd if only because Republicans would never countenance a new Democratic majority.

(55,108 posts)If tRump fell dead there would be much rejoicing.
tRump falling dead from a heart attack is a very real possibility given his weight, his diet and his anger. That there would be much rejoicing is surely true and definitely not unreal.
Perhaps you are not familiar with the use of the word "if", which describes a hypothetical situation. Hypothetical does not mean unreal.
When I say "there is no if" I mean the hypothetical IS in this case unreal.
Martin68
(25,614 posts)misunderstand. Perhaps you think you are the only person who believes Canada is safe from Trump.
Bernardo de La Paz
(55,108 posts)Just for you: Canada is not safe from tRump. He has already done damage and will probably do more. Canada is not safe from tRump.
You posed an "if" with a hypothetical (51st state), and I said the hypothetical (51st state) is an impossibility, hence there is no "if" because the hypothetical premise is impossible (the "if" statement is meaningless). It is simple to understand that logic.
Canada is not safe from tRump and there will be no 51st state.

But that was an era when he was obsessed over "CHIIIIIiiiiiiiiinaaaaaaaahhhhh", so had "his people" re-do what was NAFTA (with the expectation of Mexico "paying for the wall" ) while he engaged in a trade war with China that he lost.
This time, he has pretty much blown up his first term's treaty but there is no replacement... not even "concepts of a treaty".
