TORONTO (AP) Prime Minister Mark Carneys Liberal Party won Canadas federal election on Monday, capping a stunning turnaround in fortunes fueled by U.S. President Donald Trumps annexation threats and trade war.
After polls closed, the Liberals were projected to win more of Parliaments 343 seats than the Conservatives. It wasnt immediately clear, though, if they would win an outright majority at least 172 or would need to rely on one of the smaller parties to pass legislation.
The Liberals looked headed for a crushing defeat until the American president started attacking Canadas economy and threatening its sovereignty, suggesting it should become the 51st state. Trumps actions infuriated Canadians and stoked a surge in nationalism that helped the Liberals flip the election narrative and win a fourth-straight term in power.
In a victory speech before supporters in Ottawa, Carney stressed the importance of Canadian unity in the face of Washingtons threats. He also said the mutually beneficial system Canada and the U.S. had shared since World War II had ended.

Canada will likely be in a recession by then (as will the US), and Im sure Polievre will go all out blaming it on Carney.
Carney will have to act fast, and decisively. New trade agreements with Europe and Asia and the rest of the world will be essential.

(116 posts)One of the main reasons Poilievre lost is because when rightwing truckers, white supremist groups, and self righteous whackjobs blockaded the streets in Ottawa outside the Parliament, Poilievre was standing with them...laughing, shaking hands, showing support and making speeches. The was Canada's equivalent of Jan 6 debacle in Washinton DC. That act along damaged his reputation in the eyes of many Conservatives, yet he managed to push on and gain popularity throughout the country. Yet his biggest blow came when Ontario's Doug Ford gave him the cold shoulder continuously throughout the campaign, thus shifting Ontario, a Conservative stronghold, to the Liberal Party. His belligerent, short tempered, fingerpointing, insulting attitude, modelled on the likes of Donald Trump, did not go well with Canadians. He did not even win his own riding, which gives him a serious problem to be able to continue as leader. Good riddance to this jerk!
