Exclusive: Christian leaders blast Trump's "anti-Christian bias" unit

A group of Christian leaders is denouncing a new White House task force aimed at rooting out "anti-Christian bias" at a time when the Trump administration is going after liberal Christian groups that help immigrants and the poor.

Why it matters: It's the latest example of divisions between moderate and conservative Christians who are at odds over the administration's free speech and immigration policies.

Zoom in: In a letter signed by two dozen leaders and scholars, the group of leaders say they reject the idea that there is widespread persecution of Christians in the United States — a popular claim among white evangelicals.

The leaders say they fear that the "anti-Christian Bias Task Force" will be weaponized to privilege one tradition within Christianity over others, creating anti-Christian bias even as it claims to combat it.

"We are also aware of how claims of 'anti-Christian bias' are shown to provide cover for white supremacy," the letter says.

The letter was signed by Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, CEO and president of the Interfaith Alliance, and Rev. Liz Theoharis, co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign, among others.

State of play: In February, President Trump signed an executive order "establishing a task force to end the anti-Christian weaponization of government and unlawful conduct targeting Christians."

It fulfills a promise Trump made to white evangelicals — who were among his strongest supporters — to prevent the federal government from requiring them to provide reproductive care to employees or protect the rights of transgender people.

Last week, Attorney General Pam Bondi held the task force's first meeting and took comments from evangelicals who alleged the Biden administration had targeted them.

Here is an excerpt in the letter that is spot on -

We reject the proposition that there is widespread persecution of Christians in the United States. Christianity in America is diverse in its practices, beliefs, racial and ethnic backgrounds, political affiliation and understanding of the way to manifest our beliefs in our work for the common good. Marshalling the resources of the federal government for a nonexistent threat is a gross misuse of taxpayer resources, especially when there has been a rise in not just bias but hate-based violence against Jewish, Muslim, and other religious communities. We fear that the “Anti-Christan Bias Task Force” will be weaponized to privilege one tradition within Christianity over others, ironically creating anti-Christian bias even as it claims to combat it. We are also aware of how claims of “anti-Christian bias” are shown to provide cover for white supremacy.

It's the same thing as their use of the term "antisemitism", not in its true meaning or to truly help to combat it as a scourge to society, but as a label to cloak their heartless and ruthless efforts to suppress the free speech of anyone who is not a RW bigoted loon.

Show up with Bibles and demand to know if they eat pork or shellfish, if they have tattoos, if they go to church wearing glasses. Ask them if they lie. Ask them if they steal. Ask them if they commit adultery. If you get a yes, they yell "Sinner!" and demand they be flogged for their sins.

Or (my favorite):

Loudly demand the country be run by the teachings of Jesus and say, "If you refuse the teachings of Jesus, you are not a Christian. End of story"

Show up and recite the Beatitudes, then the verses where Jesus tells the rich to help the poor, then recite Matthew 25: 41 - 46, here Jesys says if you do not help the poor, the sick,the elderly, the immigrant, you will go to hell.

And see if you get thrown out. THAT is where you yell "Anti Christian Bias" at them.

6. I don't think that means what it sounds like

They probably meant "a defect in your vision" to mean "if you're still worshipping the same 28 gods you did before you became a Christian, you can't come to our temple."
