Multiple Cities Cancel Juneteenth Celebrations: What to Know

Several cities across the U.S. have canceled Juneteenth celebrations this year, citing a range of concerns from logistical challenges to safety and the evolving political climate.
Why It Matters
Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in the United States were informed of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation passed by Congress designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday. The move followed a nationwide reckoning on racial justice sparked by the murder of George Floyd by police in the summer of 2020.
Juneteenth organizers have provided different reasons for cancelling events this year. Though President Donald Trump's administration is not directly connected to the cancelations, some organizers said they were cancelling events due to the political climate since Trump's return to office.
Trump signed an executive order in January directing federal agencies to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. That prompted a New Jersey brach of the NAACP to move its Juneteenth celebration off federal property over fears it could violate the order and prompt retaliation.

As a note, "Juneteenth" is not some random "E.O. holiday". It's an actual FEDERAL holiday.

(1,398 posts)WHERE HISTORY ECHOES AND FREEDOM LIVES
On Galveston Island, Juneteenth isnt just remembered once a yearits honored every day. This island is the birthplace of Juneteenth, where the promise of freedom was first spoken into reality. It lives in the landscape, the landmarks, and the collective memory of the community.
Each June, Galveston comes alive with parades, music, storytelling, and reflection, but the spirit of Juneteenth is present year-roundin every wave that meets the shore and every brick that lines these historic streets.
Walk where history was made. Celebrate the legacy of resilience. Experience the coastal shores where freedom truly began.

Saw my first fire ant (actually a swarm of them) next to a trashcan near the hotel pool. On the road from Houston to Galveston, I wanted to sing some Glen Campbell!

(1,375 posts)I predict someone in Congress will sponsor a bill to change it to Trump Day before the end of the year.
And it will be a real vomit-fest.

I'm going to show up for Juneteenth in my community and encourage all of my friends to go and celebrate with our fellow Americans.
Someone once called it a 'fake holiday' - I said "Oh, a holiday commemorating the emancipation of a sizeable portion of our population from the evil of slavery is more "fake" than a holiday commemorating a guy who didn't "discover" America?"
