The No Kings protests in every state may have been the biggest day of demonstrations in American history, a data analyst has suggested. Based on hundreds of crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we dont have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6m people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday, independent data journalist G Elliott posted to X Sunday.
For reference, thatd mean Saturdays demonstrations featured 1-2 percent of the total population of 340 million taking to the streets in more than 2,000 cities to voice their opposition to the increasingly authoritarian, far-right policies the president has pursued since assuming office for the second time.
The No Kings rallies follow after a spate of demonstrations against immigration raids carried out in Los Angeles and the surrounding area last week, to which Trump deployed 4,000 members of the National Guard and 700 Marines over the objection of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
In a full report on the figures from Saturdays demonstrations, Morris added that mounting backlash against Trumps second term has also witnessed dramatically more protest activity than during his first stint in the White House. Since his inauguration in January, Trumps administration has witnessed more than 15,000 protests and rallies, representing a threefold increase in the number of public demonstrations that had taken place by this point in 2017.

Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels.

Our unofficial crowdsourced estimate of yesterdayâs protest turnout is rising to 4.2-7 million as we gather more data. At this point potentially the second-largest single day of protest in U.S. history! www.gelliottmorris.com/p/no-kings-d...

Of course, crowdsourcing data isnt perfect; some local reports may be inflated, and others undercounted. And the formula we use to project attendance in places where we dont have data assumes they are similar to the places where we do. Thats a necessary assumption, but an assumption nonetheless.
So this is by no means an official tally. But we do think its the most comprehensive tally currently available. Hundreds of data-gatherers have been compiling accounts of event attendance and checking them against available sources since Saturday morning. From a journalism perspective, this approach at least standardizes measurement and provides references to check our math, even if it doesnt completely avoid the usual pitfalls of estimating crowd size (or the assumptions above). But in this case, were interested in speed and thoroughness, not perfection.

BumRushDaShow
(154,538 posts)since he mentions the data is "crowd sourced". Haven't dug into how they work the submissions but I think he acknowledged it is just an estimate and some of the places on the list were guesstimates based on nearby reports... (so many small towns and villages had people lining their main roads with signs as it is)!

(27,999 posts)So I imagine that includes many smaller locations that may not have reported yet. The numbers could be much higher.
I appreciate the effort because so much of our so-called media has done a pee-poor job reporting it overall.
But as a lover and former frequent user of statistics, I know you can't throw a project like that together overnight.
I'm looking forward to the ultimate number.
Thanks so much for sharing the spreadsheet!!

(6,420 posts)Listed as 1,000 while actually 3-5 times that, at least. I went back to my photos and literally counted "heads". There are a couple of towns where they have updated counts that have increased several fold.

(154,538 posts)he mentioned the numbers were whay were received "as of midnight June 15" (and if that is east coast "midnight", then obviously there would be more from the west coast that might not have made that cut off) and then later he thanks people for data for the "initial estimates". So he may (or probably) will do more updates and publish those at some point.

(5,832 posts)And... other than losing where I parked my car. I enjoyed it immensely. I am saddened with the crowds that came out we didn't hit the 3.5%... i was really hoping we'd hit or surpass it.
For all of us "of an age" who participated, I hope you're doing okay today. My hips hurt so bad I can't walk on my own to the kitchen. But I wouldn't trade yesterday for anything.
