18 U.S.C. § 249 makes it a federal crime to "willfully cause bodily injury.. or death.. based on the victim's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or disability, if the crime affects interstate or foreign commerce or occurs within federal jurisdiction." None of the victims were members of the listed groups and the crime didn't affect interstate or foreign commerce or occur within federal jurisdiction. Minnesota doesn't have a separate hate crime law but a statute provides for enhanced penalties if a crime victim is a member of one those groups - but they weren't.

Mangione had come to NY from Atlanta for the purpose of murdering Brian Thompson, so the interstate requirement for federal jurisdiction was satisfied. There's no interstate element in Boelter's case.

Especially weird.

I had a patient, in the early nineties, that died of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease from infected eyeballs from the dangerous, unregulated American transplant industry.

Digging out eyeballs takes a special kind of person.

Charges say officers searched the SUV and found at least three AK-47 assault rifles, a 9mm handgun and a list of names and addresses of other public officials.

While searching the area, police found a ballistic vest, a disassembled 9mm handgun, a mask and a gold police-style badge. The criminal complaint says Boelter is the listed purchaser for at least four of the guns taken by police.

https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/vance-boelter-charges-minnesota-lawmaker-shootings/

"At least four of the guns" - with two handguns noted, does that mean it's legal to own AK-47s in Minnesota?

If the police hadn't found him at the second address, imagine what he might have gone on to do.

No different than an AR-15. You need a handgun license from the local police dept to purchase anything with a pistol grip, which basically takes 1-2 weeks to receive after you apply.

The local Fleet Farm carries a few models near me.

It seems to have had no clients at all, but apparently he used it as a way to obtain a vehicle and some law enforcement accoutrements. Whether he ever intended the business to be legit or just wanted a front for his assassination plot isn't clear yet, but although his cop ruse was enough to get him into the homes of his victims, he was never the skilled ninja-type portrayed by some of the media.

https://www.wired.com/story/psyop-far-right-conspiracy-theories-minnesota-shooting/

“The far left is murderously violent,” Elon Musk wrote on X on Saturday, a post that remains on the site and has been viewed over 50 million times.

When the facts of the story emerged—that the alleged shooter had been registered in other states as a Republican, was said to have voted for President Donald Trump and, as WIRED reported, had participated in an evangelical ministry where he preached against abortion and demonized the LGTBQ community—the conspiracy theories didn’t stop. Instead, they just changed. Posters then claimed the incident was a false flag conducted by the shadowy deep state, while trying to distance the shooter from any connection to the president and the wider MAGA movement...For years in the wake of mass shootings or politically-motivated violence, the far-right has sought to portray the perpetrators as leftists, members of antifa, part of the LGBTQ community, or connected in some way to the Democratic party, despite all evidence showing that the extremist violence is usually conducted by far-right actors...

YouTuber Benny Johnson, who has almost 5 million followers on the video-sharing site and more than 3 million followers on X, positioned the shooting as part of a growing trend of left-wing violence in a long screed on X that described the alleged shooter as “a left-wing Tim Walz appointee.“

“Everyone talks about Minnesota, but they don't talk about the guy seems to be a leftist,” Donald Trump Jr. said in an an interview with News Nation. “The guy who committed those atrocities this weekend was a Democrat who worked for Tim Walz.” When pressed by the interviewer, who replied, “he voted for your Dad,” Trump Jr. said, “I'll believe that when I see it.”
