Dr. Ron Taylor, who helped the New York Mets upset the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in the 1969 World Series, died Monday at age 87 in Toronto after a lengthy illness.
A right-handed pitcher, Taylor also won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964.
"He threw so hard that it felt like he was doing something illegal, like throwing a spitter, pine tar, something like that," former Cardinals catcher Tim McCarver said in a 2016 interview. "I found out the next year when I caught him on a more consistent basis, that was just Ron."
With the Cardinals trailing 2-1 in the 1964 World Series, Taylor held the New York Yankees' lineup hitless for four innings of Game 4 to preserve a one-run win.
